The American Museum of Natural History has canceled a Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce event honoring controversial Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro after public outcry.
“With mutual respect for the work & goals of our individual organizations, we jointly agreed that the Museum is not the optimal location for the Brazilian-Am Chamber of Commerce gala dinner,” the museum tweeted Monday. “This traditional event will go forward at another location on the original date & time.”
The move comes after it was reported that wealthy donors and influential academics were putting pressure on the museum to cancel, because Bolsonaro plans to open the Amazon rainforest to mining.
Mayor de Blasio urged the museum not to host Bolsonaro, who’s also made controversial remarks about the Holocaust.
The museum initially said it didn’t know Bolsonaro was being fêted when the event was booked.
