Becoming a member of the royal family can be an intimidating an overwhelming experience for anyone who is not born into the family. Even the late Princess Diana found the royal rules to be a bit too much on her at times. While many fans were worried about how Meghan Markle would take to her new role as the Duchess of Sussex, she seems to be adjusting just fine. So, how is it that this American woman could be adjusting so well to a life that she barely knew anything about a few years ago?
It seems that maybe the queen has been playing a role in Duchess Meghan’s adjustment into the new family. After welcoming several other new additions into the family over the years, it seems that the queen has learned from some of her past mistakes and now is committed to treating Markle better. So, is it true that Queen Elizabeth II has turned over a new leaf and is now starting to be more compassionate and considerate of her new in-laws? Here is what we know.
Did the queen make Princess Diana feel welcomed into the family?
When Princess Diana and Prince Charles first got married, Queen Elizabeth II looked as if she couldn’t have been more thrilled. During her marriage, Princess Diana and her mother-in-law seemed to have a good relationship. However, According to Princess Diana’s former secretary, Patrick Jepson, the Princess of Wales felt that the queen could have done a little more when it came to making her feel like a part of the family.
“Both from her own childhood and from her experience of marriage, [Diana] felt that she was an outsider, that she had been excluded,” Jepson had said.
Jepson had then gone on to say that even though Princess Diana had felt left out from the royal family, she was able to use that feeling and turn it into something good. It was because she knew what it felt like to be considered an outsider that made her want to help a wide range of people that were in need, including those who were suffering from life-altering illnesses.
How Queen Elizabeth II has learned her lesson
There may be a part of the queen that may always feel slightly guilty for allowing Princess Diana to not feel like a true member of the family. That could explain why the queen has gone out of her way to make Markle feel welcomed.
Another reason why the queen is said to have made an “unusual effort” to make Markle feel like part of the family is that royal life is such a foreign concept to the young duchess and she wants to make sure that Markle is able to conform to the new set of rules that she is now obligated to follow.
Just a few weeks after Prince Harry and Markle said “I do,” the queen personally took the new duchess out on her first royal outing. The two seemed to get along quite well and many were commenting about how nice it was to see the queen taking the time to show Markle the ropes. According to Page Six, a royal insider had said: “Meghan seems to have forged a particularly close relationship with the Queen if you compare that to when other people have married into the royal family.”
How long will Meghan Markle’s close relationship with the queen last?
Making sure that future generations will continue to carry on royal traditions has always been very important to the queen. When Princess Diana and Prince Charles divorced, Princess Diana didn’t particularly feel the need to remain loyal to the royal family and she went on to divulge many behind-the-scenes secrets about the family. It is for this reason that many people believe that the queen will continue to do everything in her power to make sure that Markle feels loved and welcomed into the family.
We can’t say for sure that the queen is being nice to Markle for strategic reasons. But no matter why she has decided to take the former Suits actress under her wing, we are just glad that Markle has a good role model and teacher to help her seamlessly transition into her role as the Duchess of Sussex.
