Police warning as ‘car bomb’ goes off near Derry courthouse

A suspected car bomb has exploded outside a courthouse in Northern Ireland.

Pictures from the scene show a vehicle on flames on Bishop street in Derry.

The explosion happened at around 20:15 GMT on Saturday.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has told people to stay away from the city centre as they deal with the incident.

PSNI Derry City and Strabane tweeted: "Bishop Street Closed STAY AWAY Suspected Car Bomb".

Witnesses say they heard a loud bang inside pubs and clubs in the area and saw a large plume of smoke.

A large section of the city centre is now being sealed off by officers.

Several years ago bollards were installed in Bishop Street so cars could not park outside the court building, according to reports.

There are no reports of casualties at this stage.

One person on Twitter wrote: "Everyone in town be careful. A bomb just went off in the Courthouse on Bishop Street."

DUP MLA Gary Midleton wrote on Twitter: PSNI have confirmed there were no injuries in the serious incident at Bishops Street. Vehicle hijacked with explosion outside courthouse. Disgraceful act of terrorism.
