Galway’s Joe Canning set to miss 14-16 weeks through injury

Galway GAA have confirmed that 2017 Hurler of the Year Joe Canning is set to be sidelined for up to 16 weeks through injury.

The Portumna star suffered a groin injury during last weekend’s Allianz League semi-final loss to Waterford. Canning was stretchered off, and it has now been confirmed he will be out for 14-16 weeks as he will require surgery.

Meanwhile, St Thomas’ club man Fintan Burke damaged his cruciate knee ligaments in the All-Ireland club final defeat to Ballyhale Shamrocks, and is out for the entirety of the 2019 season.

“I, and all the team wish Joe and Fintan a speedy recovery from their injuries,” said Galway manager Micheal Donoghue. “They were both very unlucky to pick up injuries at this stage in the season.

“Even by his own high standards, Joe Canning’s performances this year have been exceptional. He is in good spirits and has a positive mindset facing surgery and rehab period.
