The Marvel blockbuster – the sequel to last year’s Avengers: Infinity War – is in cinemas later this month on a huge wave of hype. Since half of all living things in the universe were turned to dust at the climax of the 2017 smash, fans have been guessing who will return, and how. The Russo brothers have maintained that their goal is to surprise moviegoers, and it seems they’re still very much on track.
Speaking to Jake Hamilton, Anthony Russo said: “Here’s the thing, the fans are so passionate and they spend such a long time living with these characters, thinking about these characters, and they’re using their imaginations to follow where these stories could possibly go.
“Sometimes they’re wildly off, sometimes they’re kinda next door to what might happen.”
He added: “Here’s the thing, nothing’s ever that close.
“You can get kinda close, but it’s never exactly.”
Joe elaborated: “Our mission’s always to surprise people. So we try to make really surprising choices.”
It’s likely that some fan theories are at least in the right ballpark, perhaps when it comes to the broad means by which the heroes will try to achieve their goal (Quantum Realm, time travel, and so on) – but what could the directors possibly have in store that nobody has already guessed?
We don’t have much longer to find out – the film will be out before the end of the month.
In the meantime, Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula, has teased a possible “revenge” sequence with her character’s adoptive father Thanos – the villain responsible for the Decimation.
“I think it’s safe to say she’s got some daddy issues, because her dad is Thanos,” Gillan told press over the weekend, as the publicity for Avengers: Endgame heats up.
“I’m excited for her to finally face the source of her abuse.
“This has been building through multiple movies, the Guardians movies.
“She’s talked about how she wants to inflict revenge and we all know about that – so I want to know how to try and face that.”
Avengers: Endgame is out on April 25.
