How to nail a seasonal hair and makeup change

Road Test

This week I try … a seasonal hair-colour change

The lowdown

The parting in my hair has turned into a grey runway strip, so I'm visiting my mane colourist, Damien Rayner. With winter on the approach, it's time to introduce some darker shades into my blonde, balayaged hair, inspired by actor and model Lily-Rose Depp's brunette shade.

Because my post-summer hair is very porous, Damien goes for Original & Mineral's ammonia-free Colour and Restore treatment for some TLC. This also helps protect the blonde in my hair while a fudge colour is worked through. He then adds blonde depths to create a soft, rose-bronze blonde, "reminiscent of that sepia tone from old photos".

Pain factor Zero.

Downtime Two hours.

Results The sepia tone suits me, and it's an uplifting change.

Where to get it Sydney: Damien Rayner at Kimmy Ralph's Hair Boutique, Cost: from $250. Melbourne: Joey Scandizzo Salon, Cost: from $240.

Use a weekly treatment mask: try Original & Mineral Seven Day Miracle Moisture Masque (, $32).

Trend: Autumn Lips

I never need an excuse for a new lipstick. Arriving just in time for colder weather, these newbies cover all the bases, from deep-luxe raspberry to fire-engine red – and, of course, the obligatory perfect matte pink. Change it up.

Time to give nails a new-season update. Here's a perfect musky mauve nail shade that'll work on both fingers and toes; let's call it the new nude. To make it last, always use a base coat and be religious about applying cuticle oil daily and a topcoat every two days. Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Purple Ray, (, $41).

A pencil is always hard to beat, as it is easy to create feathery strokes. We love Benefit's versatile four-colour Cosmetics Brow Contour Pro (, $59). It has a light and deep brow shade, edge definer and arch highlighter and comes in four tonal choices.
