Ruth Griffin: Post-workout face products that can be easily chucked into your gym bag

Hands up who has been upping their workout regimes this January? New Year’s resolutions are in full swing up and down the country as lots of us try to make a healthy start 2019 by incorporating more exercise and more movement into our lives.

Whatever your exercise poison is – whether it’s walking, swimming, yoga, weight-lifting or even marathon training – one common bond is the need for cleansing sweaty skin after our workouts so that it doesn’t suffer from blocked pores that cause flare-ups. And if you’re training several times a week, you’ll want to use products that won’t leave your skin parched.

With this in mind, I’ve pulled together some great post-workout face washes and scrubs to keep you looking fresh-faced and fabulous for 2019, and all at January wallet-friendly price points!

Ask the expert: Aoibhín Garrihy

Aoibhín Garrihy is an actor, model and new mum who always looks glowing. She is also a wellness warrior (see and the face of Lloyds Pharmacy Change Your Health campaign. Here, she shares her tips on looking great, feeling strong and being happy…

How do you give your skin and hair a New Year overhaul after the festive season?

I love to do masks and peels and particularly love a Murad mask to really rejuvenate the skin. I try every January not to wash my hair as much as it’s tired from all the styling over the festive season and instantly notice an improvement. Water is my new best friend at this time of year and try to drink as much of it as I can.

What are some of the best skincare secrets you’ve picked up over your years acting and modelling?

Look after and invest in your crown jewels (as my mum calls them)… your hair and your teeth. SPF every single day – even in winter and in Ireland. I wear 50+ every day and it really is the key to younger, healthier skin. I just wish I had known this earlier! I’ve also learned that less is definitely more and that one of the best beauty accessories is a big smile.

Are you a believer/follower of the ‘beauty from the inside out’ philosophy, or the 360-degree approach to minding your appearance?

I think a bit of both! I really believe the key to looking great is to feel great on the inside. That’s where you begin. The rest is just decoration!

As a busy Mum, what are some of your favourite things to do to de-stress?

I love the outdoors. It’s my therapy. I’m lucky enough to live in the West with the Atlantic on my doorstep and whenever I spend time surrounded by nature I feel instantly better, recharged and energised.

What is the biggest beauty myth, in your opinion?

In an incredibly commercial age where we are bombarded with marketing campaigns and luxury brands we are led to believe you must spend big in order to look beautiful. The best beauty rituals and routines are the ones that don’t cost you or the earth: sleep, water, nourishing food and exercise!

What are your favourite skincare picks?

I tend to pick and choose different products from different brands but currently La Roche-Posay is a real hit in our house. Particularly the SPF as it’s gentle enough on babies too. I’m also a fan of seaweed for the skin, and Wild Irish Seaweed do a fantastic range of masks for exfoliation and repair.

What are some of your favourite make-up and hair picks?

⬤ L’Oréal’s Techniart PLI Styling Spray. It helps hold a wave for days!

⬤ I got a set of Real Techniques Brushes for Christmas from my sister Doireann and it’s been a game-changer!

⬤ I apply my favourite foundation with them – ‘Hello Flawless’ from Benefit and it does not budge!
