Britney Spears reveals fellow pop superstar Madonna took her under her wing after her whirlwind breakup with Justin Timberlake.

In her new memoir, The Woman in Me, Britney recalls living alone in New York after cohabiting with Justin during their relationship.

She reveals it was a “surreal” time and rarely left her apartment.

The singer says she didn’t go to the gym, exclusively ate takeout food and only had a handful of visitors.

Among them was Madonna, with whom she already had a friendship after meeting each other at celebrity events and parties.

Britney wrote that she “needed a little guidance” and Madonna “tried to mentor me”.

The …Baby One More Time songstress was initiated into Kabbalah in a red-string ceremony with the Queen of Pop, and went on to get a tattoo in Hebrew inspired by her experience.

“She told me I should be sure to take time out for my soul, and I tried to do that,” Britney said of her mentor.

“She modelled a type of strength that I needed to see. There were so many different ways to be a woman in the industry:

“You could get a reputation for being a diva, you could be professional, or you could be ‘nice’.”

Britney admits she had started out as passive in her career after following the model set by her mom, who she describes as “helpless”.

After receiving guidance from Madonna, she writes about wanting to go back to her childhood to be her own mentor so she could grow up to become a “bada** b***h”.

She recalls Madonna railing against the music industry after receiving her Billboard Woman of the Year award.

The Like a Virgin icon called out the “blatant misogyny” against female performers, which Britney was determined not to fall prey to.

Their close friendship eventually led to one of the most controversial moments of their careers, when the two popstars kissed at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards.

Britney Spears’s memoir, The Woman in Me, published by Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, is available Oct. 24 wherever books are sold.
