Celebrity MasterChef: Wynne Evans wins the final
BBC Celebrity Masterchef winner 2023 Wynne Evans has revealed that he tried to take his own life.
The 51-year-old opera singer and presenter beat Emmerdale actress Amy Walsh and Love Island contestant Lucas Bish in the final round of the BBC One cooking competition on Friday.
In an interview that aired after his win, he said: “It was funny, when they gave me the trophy, because I wasn’t really expecting to win. I thought Amy [Walsh] had smashed it.
“When they gave me the trophy, I’ll just get melancholy for a moment, right, I remember thinking six years ago, I was contemplating, well, I tried to take my own life and now look at me.”
Before going on to add: “I’m standing here in a studio with the MasterChef trophy. It was a really poignant moment for me.”

Wynne was a huge hit with the Masterchef viewers throughout the competition and impressed judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace by creating Welsh dishes made with Welsh recipes.
In the final he made a Welsh inspired three-course meal which included a starter of Carmarthen-Japanese sumo tuna tartare with avocado, edamame beans and wasabi, served with deep-fried cockle popcorn and a mango egg.
Followed by his main course, a bread of Evans cannon of lamb, served on samphire with wild garlic, porcini mushrooms and lamb rendered fried bread, with pomme dauphine and a fondant leek, finished with a red wine and red currant jus.
All topped off with a dessert of traditional Bara Brith, which he served with Caerphilly cheese and fig jam and an additional serving of brie ice cream on crumbled Bara Brith and poached figs.
Speaking about his winning menu, he said: “I think these dishes represent everything that I am – local produce, stuff that I can easily get at home, and everything that I like to eat.”

Fans were quick to take to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their love for the BBC Radio Wales DJ. One fan wrote: “Omg Wynne is the winner! Da iawn @wynneevans you deserve it” followed by clapping hand emojis.
Another fan posted: “Outstanding win Wynne! Been excellent throughout and an amazing finish!”
Whilst a third wrote: “Well done Wynne! @MasterChefUK I think you should take a leaf out of Masterchef Australia’s book though, the final is an event where the eliminated competitors come back & watch & they all celebrate with the winner. Not just poor Wynne on his own with John & Greg. Felt a bit sad!”
This isn’t the first time the star has spoken out about his struggles with mental health. In an interview with Welsh journalist Dot Davies earlier this year, Wynne spoke about the breakdown of his marriage in 2016, revealing he was at his lowest ebb.
He told BBC Radio Wales: “I was going through the worst depression, clinical depression. I would think about (suicide), I would try and action it… I couldn’t see a way out; I couldn’t see a way of ever being happy again.”
He added: “I was feeling suicidal, and it was terrible. I just thought, I’m either going to do something terrible or I need to go and see a proper psychiatrist.”
He has now turned his life around and classes his depression and anxiety as a “superpower” and urges others to “put the work in” to improve their mental health.
