Dolly Parton Once Called Bob Dylan a ‘Weird Buckaroo’

Dolly Parton has navigated celebrity with a smile on her face. She has made friends with a variety of different people and has picked up a multitude of fans. Still, there’s one person who she didn’t quite connect with. She explained how her meetings with Bob Dylan went and how she now feels about the renowned artist.

Dolly Parton has a sunny disposition

Parton has a bubbly, exuberant personality that draws people to her. She has picked up fans far outside of the country music world. Though her films, businesses, and charity work help attract a wider audience, many people like her for her behavior.

“The whole magic about me is that I look artificial but I’m totally real,” she told USA Today. “People can see that. They forgive me for being gaudy. They forgive me for not being stylish. They forgive me for not being as smart as some educated people might be. People see me. I want them to know me. I’m not bashful.”

She once shared her thoughts about Bob Dylan

Parton has covered three Dylan songs, “Knocking on Heaven’s Door,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” and “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright,” but he didn’t join her on the records. She reportedly wanted Dylan’s accompaniment, but he declined.

Parton admitted to The Daily Mail that though she’d met Dylan several times, she never felt “any warmth from him to me.”

“I think I have offended him somehow by the way I looked or the way I was,” she explained. “I love his music but he’s a weird buckaroo.”

She elaborated on this feeling in an interview with the Telegraph.

“I don’t feel like we ever connected. Maybe he just thought I was too phony or he didn’t get to know me too well,” she said.

Despite this, Parton confirms that she’s still a big fan of Dylan.

“I always loved his music. His mind is so deep but his melodies are so good. They lend themselves so well to harmonies,” she said. “I’ve even thought about making an album called Dolly Does Dylan but I think that sounds too close to Debbie Does Dallas!”

Dolly Parton didn’t click with Bob Dylan, but she has these famous friends

Parton may not have hit it off with Dylan, but she does have many friends, famous or otherwise. She has formed relationships with Jack White, Reba McEntire, Miley Cyrus, and Jane Fonda, among others.

“She is profound and she has a really, really huge heart, and she’s really smart and deeply spiritual,” Fonda said of Parton to The New Yorker.

Parton has also maintained a friendship with the same person for most of her life. She met Judy Ogle as a child, and they’ve been friends ever since.

“Judy and I have been best friends for 64 years, since we were little kids,” she told The Mirror. “Our parents knew each other, we grew up together, we were like sisters, became best friends.”

Ogle has worked in some of Parton’s films and appeared in the documentary For the Love of Dolly.

“She went to the army when we graduated because she needed the insurance and she needed to help her family and I was trying to make it. As soon as she got out, she came to Nashville and we’ve been together ever since.”
