Courteney Cox, 57, reprised her role as reporter Gale Weathers in the fifth instalment of the popular horror franchise Scream, which hit cinemas in January. Also returning to the cast, was her ex-husband David Arquette, 50, who portrays Gale’s husband officer Dewey Riley, and the pair described their on-screen reunion “cathartic” and “emotional”.

It was such an emotional thing to come back

It’s been 10 years since they last appeared in a movie together, and nine years since their divorce.

In a new interview with Parade, the Friends actress said: “It was such an emotional thing to come back.

“I had the same feeling when I walked on the set of Friends.

“I got really teary-eyed then too!”

David and Courteney were married from 1999 to 2010 and share 17-year-old daughter Coco together.

They’ve known each other for 25 years, meeting on the first Scream film in 1996.

The pair dated for four years before tying the knot, but announced their separation in 2010 not long after production on Scream 4 ended.

David filed for divorce in 2012, which was finalised a year later.

But they’ve remained friends, and he recently said acting alongside each other again was a “cathartic experience”.

He told the New York Times: “It’s a cathartic experience to just be able to act opposite Courteney.

“It’s been 25 years of our lives.

“We’ve grown up together. We have a child together.”

They were last seen on-screen together in 2011, when the fourth film was released.

While their characters have always played a prominent part in the Scream franchise with their whirlwind relationship at the centre of fan’s hearts, their relationship in last film was very different and very realistic.

And while the former couple didn’t have trouble acting together while they were separated in real life, Courteney admitted she doesn’t have the “fondest memories” of scenes about Gale and Dewey’s martial problems, as they sometimes mirrored their own.

The pair have since moved on with their lives, as Courteney found love with Snow Patrol band member Johnny McDaid, with the two becoming official in 2013.

David also married  journalist and producer Christina McLarty in 2014, and the two share two children, Charlie, seven, and four-year-old Alexis.
