Mary Poppins star Glynis Johns says turning 100 ‘doesn’t make any difference to me’ as she reflects on her long life and career

Mary Poppins Star Glynis Johns celebrated her 100th birthday this past Thursday.

The actress, who portrayed Winifred Banks in the classic 1964 Disney musical film, reflected on her career during an interview with ABC7, in which she opened up about her work and longevity.

The performer, whose family has publicly expressed their desire to have the British government designate her as a Dame, also stated that, despite her age, she still felt as if she was ready to get back to set.

When asked how turning 100 felt, Johns stated that ‘It doesn’t make any difference to me,’ before quipping: ‘Well, I looked very good for every age.’

The actress also spoke about being included in the original cast of Stephen Sondheim’s 1973 musical, in which she performed the song Send In The Clowns.

Reflecting on her appearances in the show and being able to sing for her fans, the performer recalled: ‘I got applause for that. I loved doing it. I felt it.’ 

Johns was given the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Desiree Armfeldt in 1973 for her work in the show.

During her interview, the actress proudly showed off her Tony Award and stated that it was ‘better than nothing, isn’t it?’ 

The performer also spoke about her busy career during the interview, and stated: ‘I’ve been working at something ever since I was born, I think.’

Johns concluded the interview after being told that her work would likely be remembered by fans well into the future. 

The performer stated described the idea of having her work impact future audiences as a ‘lovely thought’ before adding: ‘That’s what I’d hoped.’ 

The actress, who was born in Pretoria, South Africa, on October 5 1923, began her career in the 1930s with various stage appearances in the United Kingdom.

She eventually made her screen debut at the age of 15 in the 1938 feature South Riding.

Johns went on to move to Hollywood, and her first major role in an American film was in No Highway in the Sky, which premiered in 1951.

She went on to receive a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1960 for her role as Mrs. Firth in The Sundowners.

The performer spent the next three decades working on various television, film and stage projects, and she was named as a Disney Legend in 1998.

Johns’ most recent role in a film was in the comedy feature Superstar, which premiered in 1994.
