Great British Bake Off rich list reveals highest paid contestants – did your favourite make the cut?

The Great British Bake Off has kicked off its 14th series, delighting fans and baking fanatics across the nation once more.

The launch show aired at 7pm on Tuesday, and, as per the trend set by previous series, episodes are expected to then air at 8pm every Tuesday on Channel 4.

With Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith reprising their roles as judges, the new series marks the arrival of vivacious new co-host Alison Hammond, alongside fellow host Noel Fielding. 

The contestants for the new series of The Great British Bake Off sees the show’s first ever deaf baker featured on the line-up, as well as a scientist, an accountant and a retired flight attendant introduced

As the contestants compete for the coveted position as star baker, and, ultimately, a national treasure, we take a look at the previous winners and how much they’re worth today – thanks to lucrative TV appearances, cookbook deals and more.   

Nadiya Hussain – Series 6

Boasting over 870K Instagram followers, she earns £3,726.87 for every post she uploads, according to National World. 

The mother-of-two has presented numerous shows since winning the sixth series of Bake Off, including Nadiya’s British Food Adventure, The Chronicles of Nadiya and Nadiya’s Family Favourites. 

According to Heart Radio, she is now thought to be worth around £3.7million thanks to her TV appearances. 

Nadiya has also published several books, including Nadiya’s Everyday Baking, Nadiya’s Kitchen and the children’s baking book Bake Me a Story. 

In 2016, she was even handpicked to bake a cake for the late Queen Elizabeth II for her 90th birthday celebrations.

Nadiya has also won and has been shortlisted for numerous awards, including a 2017 Women in Film and Television award.

She also writes a monthly column for The Times Magazine, a part of the Saturday supplement of The Times, and her recipes have appeared in BBC’s Good Food magazine, The Telegraph and the Guardian.

In 2020, Nadiya was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire for her services to broadcasting and the culinary arts. 

Joanne Wheatley – Series 2

Winner of the second series, Joanne Wheatley, 53, is probably one of the most financially successful Bake Off stars to date.

The mother-of-three went on to launch her own cookery school, where she holds classes on cake-making, and she’s written columns, appeared on TV and has written two cookbooks.

She was reported to have earned £75,000 from those lucrative book deals after racking up £500,000 in sales, and now resides in Lisbon. 

However, she only has over 27K followers on Instagram, and, according to National World, earns £196.65 per post – the least amount earned per post of any of the previous GBBO winners.

‘Bake Off totally changed my life,’ she said. ‘I couldn’t believe it when my books became bestsellers.’

The Essex native’s husband was famously in prison for conspiracy with others to conceal, convert and transfer the proceeds of crime – all during her very successful stint on the show.

Candice Brown  – Series 7

TV success: Candice won Bake Off in 2016, going on to write two cookbooks, before baking on ITV’s This Morning and Christmas Kitchen while also appearing as a panellist on Loose Women

Candice Brown, 38, won the seventh series of The Great British Bake Off in 2016, and has gone on to become an author, TV show panellist and a topic of interest in the beauty and fashion world. 

Candice has 267K followers on Instagram and earns around £1,156.84 per post, as reported by National World. 

She was touted to get a £1million payday in deals alone after winning the show, and it is believed she has doubled her earning since, thanks to a steady stream of cooking and writing gigs. 

Brown has two cookbooks under her belt – Comfort and Happy Cooking – and, since winning Bake Off, has become a Sunday Times columnist, baked on ITV’s This Morning and Christmas Kitchen, and appeared as a panellist on Loose Women.

After gaining prominence for her striking, statement lips during her time on the show, Candice has also been featured in Hello magazine and tested lipsticks for Heat magazine.

The Bake Off star has also participated in live baking demos at Foodies Festival and The Cake and Bake show. 

John Whaite – Series 3

John Whaite, 34, won the show’s third season of Bake Off, with a heaven and hell chiffon cake, aged just 23, after sacking off college to take a chance on GBBO.

Ten years on, Whaite is a respected TV personality, presenter and chef, who had a residency on Lorraine from 2013 to 2016.

He has 302K followers on his Instagram page – earning a cool £1,305.46 per post.

Whaite, from Chorley, Lancashire, made history in 2021, when he made up half of Strictly’s first ever male same-sex pairing, taking to the Birmingham ballroom with pro dancer and choreographer Johannes Radebe.

He made it to the final, but was beaten to the punch by Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice who took home the win.

Off screen, John enjoys a very successful career as a food writer, having penned four cooking books.

He also opened his own cooking school in 2016, named John Whaite’s Kitchen, which opened on his family’s farm in Wrightington, Lancashire, in a 400-year-old barn.

It offers both cookery classes for groups and individuals, and hosts supper clubs and private dining experiences.

According to Entertainment Daily, John’s net-worth is estimated to be £1.5million thanks to his varied endeavours.

Edd Kimber – Series 1

Edd’s enormous earnings: Edd Kimber has become a prolific food writer with six cookbooks under his belt since his win in 2010 – with his first book believed to have sold for £150,000

Edd Kimber, 38, was catapulted to fame when he won the first series of Bake Off 12 years ago, in 2010. 

The show allowed him to quit his job as a debt collector to pursue baking full time.

His Instagram page boasts a whopping 444K followers, where he earns £1,740.04 per post, as reported by National World.

‘When the finale aired I still remember people applauding the idea that a man could win a baking show,’ he wrote in The Telegraph in 2016.

Edd has also become a prolific food writer with six cookbooks under his belt, the latest, Small Batch Bakes: Baking Cakes, Cookies, Bars and Buns for One to Six People, having been published this year.

His first book is believed to have sold for £150,000, and his two further publications made £100,000, of which he is believed to have taken a £37,500 cut at the time.

Edd, who was famously rejected by his local catering college prior to his GBBO appearance, also writes about baking for magazines, works as a private chef, and gives cookery demonstrations around the world.

He had a successful stint as the resident baker on The Alan Titchmarsh Show on ITV from 2010 to 2014, and ran a pop-up bakery in Fortnum & Mason, as well as leading other baking classes.

Rahul Mandal – Series 9

World record: Nuclear research scientist Rahul went back to his university job after his 2018 win, but went on to create a record-breaking cake that contained 100 different ingredients  

Rahul Mandal, 35, won the ninth series of The Great British Bake Off in 2018. 

He has 411K followers on his Instagram page, and earns £1,649.65 per post, according to National World. 

Even after his win, he returned to his day job as a nuclear research scientist at the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Department.

As an ambassador, Mandal said he wants to inspire as many children as possible to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) – regularly hosting talks with young people to help navigate their chosen career path.

Rahul did, however, go on to bake a record-breaking cake – becoming the first to successfully include one hundred different ingredients in one. 

Each ingredient originated from a different country around the world, and styled the cake to look like suitcases stacked on top of one another with a globe of the earth as the pinnacle – standing over three foot tall and weighing over 50kg. 

Giuseppe Dell’Anno – Series 12

Italian engineer Giuseppe Dell’Anno, 47, won the twelfth series of GBBO in 2021. 

According to National World, he earns £1,732.22 per post on Instagram, where he has accumulated a 261K following. 

A trained engineer, Guiseppe is the second PhD doctor to win the show, following 2018 winner Rahul Mandal. 

Unlike Rahul, the PhD scientist is still choosing to make a profit off his skill, having released two cookbooks with Waterstones since his feat: Giuseppe’s Easy Bakes: Sweet Italian Treats, and Giuseppe’s Italian Bakes – commemorating his heritage. 

Peter Sawkins – Series 11

Title holder: Peter Sawkins, 23, was the youngest ever and first Scottish Bake Off winner when he won the eleventh series in 2020, going on to publish two cookbooks since his win

Peter Sawkins, 23, was the youngest ever and first Scottish Bake Off winner when he won the eleventh series in 2020. 

While on the show, Peter was studying Accounting and Finance at the University of Edinburgh and has since graduated from the intensive course. 

Sawkins has 263K followers on his Instagram page, Peter Bakes, and earns £1,091.65 per post, as reported by National World.

As of 2023, Peter has published two cookbooks: Peter Bakes and Peter’s Baking Party: Fun and Tasty Recipes for Future Baking Stars!  

David Atherton – Series 10

Cookbook king: 2019 winner David Atherton has written four cookbooks since his feat; My First Cook Book, My First Baking Book, My First Green Cook Book, and Good to Eat

David Atherton, 36, was the 2019 winner after a long stint in the healthcare profession. 

For every post he sends to his 156K followers on his Instagram account, Nomad Baker David, he earns £650.81, according to National World.

Atherton wrote a fortnightly column of healthy cookery for The Guardian named Fit Food with David Atherton and has appeared on children’s show Blue Peter as a guest chef. 

He has written four cookbooks; My First Cook Book, My First Baking Book, My First Green Cook Book, and Good to Eat. 

Sophie Faldo – Series 8

Army vet to amateur baker: Since winning in 2017, Sophie now owns a luxury bespoke cake shop called Sophie Faldo Couture Cakes, as well as dabbling in presenting and recipe writing

Sophie Faldo, 39, was crowned the best amateur baker in the UK in the eighth series of Bake Off, in 2017. 

Sophie is an Afghanistan veteran who only discovered her love for baking after leaving her job as an army officer – although it took her boyfriend to convince her to apply to the Great British Bake Off.

The former British Army Officer has over 45K Instagram followers and earns £316.15 per post, according to National World. 

She now owns a luxury bespoke cake shop called Sophie Faldo Couture Cakes, as well as dabbling in presenting, professional baking and recipe writing since her triumph.

Frances Quinn – Series 4

Fashion to fondue: After winning the 2013 series, Frances wrote a book called Quintessential Baking and creates custom cakes for events, with her work even appearing in Vogue 

Frances Quinn, 41, won the fourth series of The Great British Bake Off in 2013.

Raised in a Leicestershire market town, the series four winner was a clothes designer before trading one creative trade for another. 

She has over 77K followers on her Instagram, which is also called Frances Quinn, where she earns £454.57 per post, as reported by National World.   

After winning the show, she wrote a book called Quintessential Baking and she now creates custom cakes for events while also running a successful food blog, with her work has appearing in Vogue and other publications. 

In 2020, Quinn returned home to Market Harborough for lockdown – where she was banned from a Waitrose after attempting to shoplift flour and eggs – forced to hand the baking goods over to the police.

Nancy Birtwhistle – Series 5

Nancy Birtwhistle, 68, took home the Bake Off crown in 2014 after winning the fifth series.

It surprised everyone when the retired GP practice manager from Hull won – after she was previously rejected from the show for baking bread that wasn’t up to scratch. 

Nancy currently has 390K followers on Instagram, where she reportedly earns £815.91 for each post.  

Since winning the show, she has taught in schools and classes in cake judging, and exhibited her bakes at shows across the country. 

She has written for The Telegraph and her book Sizzle & Drizzle: Tips for a modern day home-maker was released in October 2019, five years after her big win. 

Birtwhistle also publishes recipes and showcases her garden, chickens, and guinea hens on her official website, and has also published one cook book called Sizzle and Drizzle.

Syabira Yusoff – Series 13

Reigning: Syabira won the 2022 series of GBBO, and currently has a profile on private chef site Yhangry, where she charges a minimum of £1000 per event and has been hired for five so far

Syabira Yusoff, 33, is the current reigning champion of GBBO, having won the thirteenth series in 2022.

Yusoff is also a scientist, having moved to the UK from Malaysia in 2013 to start her PhD.

She now lives with her boyfriend Bradley, has incorporated her work in biology into her bakes, once producing a phenomenal strand of DNA for the judges in her showstopper challenge in the semi-final.

Although she has officially been crowned the best baker in Britain this year, fans of the show might be surprised to learn Syabira has only been working with cakes and pastries for five years after first trying her hand at baking in 2017.

Since her big win was announced, King’s College London is paying homage to their star baker research associate – and announced last November its cafes and restaurants would be selling her red velvet sandwich cookies.

Although she has amassed over 88K followers on Instagram, it is not reported how much she earns for each post since her feat. 

However, Syabira currently has a profile on Yhangry – a private chef hire site – where she charges a minimum of £1000 per event and has been hired for five so far.
