Paul, known for his comedy has starred in many shows but is best known for his BBC sketch comedy series The Fast Show.

He also currently stars in the Only Fools and Horses musical that launched in 2019 at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

In a new interview with Saga Magazine, Paul opened up about his recent health issues and how fishing has helped him get through it.

When asked about his three stents he said: “In many ways I was lucky: my dad had a quadruple bypass in his fifties.

“When I had the heart stents, the guy who did it said, ‘Well I didn’t put them in for you to go and sit by the fire, so get up and go out.’

He added: “I took him at his word, so I do a lot of exercise to keep myself ticking over.”

Paul has a very strict regime when it comes to his exercises as he wants to make sure he can live the longest life possible.

The comedian said: “Weirdly, and I owe it to heart disease, it’s made me a bit more selfish about my time.

“I say to people, ‘Don’t even think about contacting me at this time because I will be doing my exercise that I need to do in order for me to be able to function, to talk to you’.”

Paul believes that “you can’t look after anyone else if you don’t look after yourself.”

He added: “I want to be able to look after my family and friends, and I can do it better if I look after myself.

“So, I’ve kind of enjoyed learning to say no to people.”

Paul currently stars in Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing with his close friend Bob.

The show aired in 2018 and has been recommissioned every year since.

On the programme the pair reflect on life after their shared major heart problems, whilst fishing at various locations.

Bob had to undergo heart surgery in 2015, after a doctor told him he risked having a heart attack on stage had he and comedy partner Vic Reeves gone ahead with a live tour that same year.
