James Martin was unrecognisable after dropping three stone in just four months when he competed in Strictly Come Dancing in 2005. He absolutely smashed it and came in fourth place.
He spoke to The Herald about his life-changing transformation on the show. He began training in September 2005 and was eliminated in December 2006.
Exercising for eight hours a day, five days a week, for four months, it’s no surprise that the chef dropped a whopping three stone (from 17st to 14st).
But those hoping to lose weight do not have to undertake such an extreme exercise regime.
The NHS recommends getting active for 150 minutes a week. You can break this up into shorter sessions.

Keeping the weight off was a pretty mammoth task for James because his whole career centres around food. But he managed it with a few lifestyle changes.
He explained: “A chef’s diet is notoriously bad, despite the lovely food you’re preparing for other people all day. We tend to cram in calories on the hoof, and at the end of a long day the last thing you feel like is going home and cooking a proper meal for yourself.”
But James decided he wasn’t going to go down that route anymore. He resolved to ditch takeaways and fast food for healthy, home cooked meals.

He said: “I no longer stuff my face with really bad things such as takeaway pizza, Mars bars and fizzy soft drinks, which I used to have tons of during my working day, just like almost every other chef in the country.”
James chose to incorporate particular healthy foods into his diet which made a huge difference. He said: “Now I eat fish twice a week as well as loads of vegetables and fresh fruit.”
Oily fish are high in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, which may help to prevent heart disease. James revealed that heart disease had been an “issue” in his family for generations.
James is a huge advocate of eating more fish and told The Herald that Britons should be upping their intake.
He said: “We might admire the Mediterranean diet but we don’t eat the way the French, Spanish or Italians eat. On holiday, we insist on going to restaurants that serve the full British breakfast, and at home we just slather on the butter and eat far too many processed foods.”
The healthy chef continued: “Six ounces or 140g a week isn’t a massive amount. Yet 70 percent of us don’t eat fish at all – and that figure is worse in Scotland, even though you’re surrounded by the sea. It’s absolutely crazy.”
For those who want to lose weight, meals comprised of oily fish and a portion of vegetables are very nutritious.
James Martin also maintained his weight loss by using a pedometer in the kitchen to track his step count.
