Kate Garraway, 53, has taken to Twitter to share a heartfelt message to Damian Lewis, 50, and the family he shared with Helen McCrory, following the sad news of the actress’ death at the age of 52. It comes after Kate interviewed Helen and Damian as they made a joint appearance on Good Morning Britain.

The actors had been working with the Prince’s Trust during lockdown, as they were both ambassadors for the charity.

The couple spoke via video link from their home about their charity work in March, just weeks before the Peaky Blinders star’s death after a secret battle with cancer.

Kate retweeted actor Damian’s statement announcing Helen’s passing in view of her 470,000 followers this morning.

She wrote in response: “Terrible news devastated for @lewis_damian and for their children and all the family.

“A wonderful woman and together a wonderful pair who were always fun to interview and a great measure just to be around. 

“Sending so much love to you all xxx.”

Fans took to Twitter to comment on Kate’s heartfelt tribute to the Harry Potter star.

One person penned: “Her last TV interview was with you.”


Another added: “Such sad and shocking news. She was a great actress and adored her in peaky blinders. RIP.XX.”

A third fan commented: “So sad, I can’t stop thinking ab it one of my favourite actresses, strong, fearless, authentic, beautiful, funny…the list goes on! 

“I knew something wasn’t right when you interviewed them recently & the way he looked at her with such love, it’s just heartbreaking.”

Damian, 50, took to his Twitter on Friday afternoon, telling his 273,800 followers: “I’m heartbroken to announce that after a heroic battle with cancer, the beautiful and mighty woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully at home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family.”

He added: “She died as she lived, fearlessly.

“God we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives.

“She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you.”

Kate had checked up on Helen during her chat with the pair, as she wondered whether she had a sore throat.

The presenter asked at the time: “Are you alright, Helen?

“You sound a bit croaky. Have you got a sore throat?”

Helen replied: “No, I’ve got children!

“And no makeup artist and no hairdresser, so if there’s any young person out there that would like a bit of help, phone up [The] Prince’s Trust and then come straight over here!”

The Prince’s Trust recently shared a picture of Damian and Helen, alongside their boss, His Royal Highness, Prince Charles, with the caption: “We are so sad to hear of the passing of our treasured celebrity Ambassador Helen McCrory, who gave so much energy and passion to help us continue changing young lives.

“Our thoughts are with Damian Lewis and their family at this time.”
