Love Island star Sammy Root has officially broken his silence after splitting with his villa flame Jess Harding, as he described the break-up as a complete “shock.”
Taking to social media to speak out about the news that had been circulating earlier today that he and Jess had decided to part ways after only two months, Sammy wrote: “Hi guys, I thought I would come online to address today's news about me and Jess."
“Yes we had a private conversation regarding our relationship but this was left up in the air as Jess is still away and we haven't had a chance to speak in person .
“For me to then see today via the media that we had officially broken up came as a total shock.”
Sammy then continued: “To be totally clear – I at least wanted a face to face conversation to see if our relationship could be saved and felt this would be the respectful way forward.”
“We had the most incredible experience winning Love Island and I genuinely saw a future with Jess.”
He then concluded his post by writing: “I was committed and respectful to our relationship. Unfortunately things don't always work out the way you'd hoped.
“Despite how this has all played out today. I think Jess is an amazing woman and genuinely wish her all the best.”
The news of the couple’s breakup came early on Tuesday 3 October, when a source close to the pair told Mail Online: "Jess and Sammy have called it quits. Things have changed since leaving the villa and Jess has realised they're better off as friends."
The former couple had been unexpectedly been crowned this year's winners, after beating Whitney Adebayo and Lochan Nowacki to the title.
Sammy and Jess had a rather rocky time in the villa with their relationship having been tested on multiple occasions throughout the competition, but things appeared to calm down for the pair after arriving back in the UK, following the series' conclusion.
Initially, things appeared to have been off to a promising start for the duo, as after leaving the villa, Jess secured a brand deal with In The Style, which is thought to have been worth six figures, while Sammy has done a number of nightclub appearances.
However, despite their high hopes for a lasting romance, not everyone was so convinced, with relationship expert and co-founder of dating app So Syncd, Louella Alderson quick to rule out any long-term relationship for the Love Island winners going forwards.
Louella told OK! : "There's a chance Sammy could get the ick with Jess after the villa. Sammy has said too many times that Jess isn't his type and he wasn't physically attracted to her. The way Sammy said this felt quite nasty at the time.
"While there doesn't necessarily need to be instant physical chemistry, as attraction may develop as you get to know someone more, it could be a red flag for Jess outside the villa."
