It's only a few weeks on since the explosive Married At First Sight UK 2022 reunion aired and Whitney Hughes is still surrounded by drama.
During her time on the hit E4 series, the legal PA, 31, and barbershop owner Matt Murray, 32, ruffled feathers as they pursued a romance despite being partnered with other people – Whitney with Duka Cavolli and Matt with Gemma Rose.
When the experiment ended, the couple sadly parted ways. But in a twist no one saw coming, Matt then jetted off on holiday with 2021 star Marilyse Corrigan – however, the pair have insisted that they're just friends.
Catching up with new, Whitney admits she regrets being with Matt and reveals why she wasn’t surprised by his getaway with Marilyse, adding, "You think you know someone but it turns out you don’t!"
Here, Whitney spills all on her romance with ex Matt and fills us in on some insider gossip…
Hi Whitney! It was so sad to see you and Matt didn’t work out. What happened there?
The problems with Matthew and I didn’t start once we left the experiment, they started during the experiment. There were a lot of issues. Like Matthew said at the reunion, he has a lot of insecurities. He just has a lot of things going on in his life and I felt like that was put onto me.
That was happening while we were in the experiment and we were able to deal with it while we were there. But once we left the apartment, it was harder because there was a long distance between the two of us. Trying to deal with issues over the phone is not quite the same so we just realised that we were better off parting ways.
Are you still in touch?
No, we’re not still in touch. We were speaking all the time, every day and all day until recently.
He recently went away with Marilyse from the 2021 series. Were you surprised to see them go off on holiday?
I was speaking to Matthew up until he went away. Was I surprised? I don’t know. I don’t know if surprised is the word because I think the Matthew that I thought I knew in the experiment perhaps isn’t the actual Matthew that he is.
So I think anything that he does, I can’t really be surprised by it because you think you know someone but it turns out you don’t. Matthew and I were really good friends. But yeah, he’s free to do whatever he pleases.
Do you have any regrets from your time on the show and what happened with Matt?
I don’t regret how I carried myself but I do really regret being with Matthew. I think I would have been better off going home – but I ran with my feelings, so it is what it is!
If you were doing the show again, who would you have picked?
I would pick my own groom, that’s what I would do! I would go and whisper in the experts’ ears and say, “No, not him, choose him!”
Since the show, have you moved on and found a new man?
I’m not seeing anyone, I’m single! But I’m open to it, I’m not closing myself off to love just because I had this insane experience. You only live once so I’m still open to love but I’m not dating at the moment.
Things didn’t work out with your original show partner, Duka. Do you have any regrets?
Not really, no, because Duka and I actually formed a friendship while we were in the experiment.
Have you kept in touch with Duka?
No, we haven’t kept in touch since the show. We’re both getting on with our lives and doing our own thing.
How do you feel you were edited on the show?
One thing I did find frustrating is comments from other people that were left out of conversations. For example, at the tea party, when I said that I found Matthew attractive, they didn’t show Gemma saying that she found Duka attractive and that we should do a “husband swap”. That was left out of the editing.
At the following dinner party, people were wondering, “Why are they shocked by Gemma’s behaviour?” and I’m like, “Well, because she told me yesterday that she fancies Duka!” But in terms of the things that came out of my mouth, I’m fine with it and I’m fine with the editing!
Were you surprised by which couples had split at the reunion?
I was a bit surprised about Chanita [Stephenson] and Jordan [Emmett-Connelly]. I had heard whispers, but I was surprised they hadn’t made it; I thought they made a great pair.
Would you ever do a dating show again?
I don’t know. To be honest, the Whitney that went in is not the Whitney that came out. I’m not closed off to love, we’ll see…
Would you recommend going on Married At First Sight?
I would say if you are 100% ready to commit to someone and you can take on having thousands of people having very strong opinions of you… yes, go for it. It’s a tough process but it benefits you in the end.
