Matthew Perry’s funeral details – Friends co-stars, tears and an 80s ballad

A private funeral took place for Friends star Matthew Perry who was laid to rest at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles on Friday.

The actor, most famous for portraying Chandler Bing in the hit US sitcom Friends, tragically passed away on 28 October at his home in LA at the age of 54.

It was said to be a ceremony of "tears and laughter" without a "dry eye in there" as friends and family members gathered to lay the actor to rest a week and bid their final farewell following his death.

The service ended with a rendition of Peter Gabriel's song 'Don't Give Up' which reportedly left everyone in tears as they remembered their beloved friend.

The funeral was attended by Matthew's parents, John Benett Perry, Suzanne, and stepfather Keith Morrison, along with other family members and close friends.

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow were also among around the 20 mourners in attendance, as reported by TMZ.

After the hour-long service, Perry was buried in a dark wooden coffin in a family-only ceremony.

The private funeral took place at the Forest Lawn cemetery in the Hollywood Hills which is less than a mile away from the studios where the hit sitcom was filmed.

Forest Lawn is the burial place of celebrities including Humphrey Bogart, Nat King Cole, Clark Gable, Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor.

An onlooker told DailyMail.com about some details of the funeral: "There was not a dry eye in there. There were a lot of tears and laughter. Only close friends and family spoke."

The Friends co-stars, along with other mourners, were seen consoling each other after making their final farewell to the late actor – with many choosing to hide their eyes behind dark sunglasses.

The service ended with the 80s ballad which features the lyrics: "No fight left or so it seems, I am a man whose dreams have all deserted, I've changed my face, I've changed my name, But no one wants you when you lose."

The song, which featured the British singer Kate Bush, also features other poignant lyrics, including: "Don't give up, 'Cause you have friends, Don't give up, You're not the only one, Don't give up, No reason to be ashamed. Don't give up, You still have us."

In a joint statement shared with People, the heartbroken Friends cast broke their silence over Matthew's death, revealing that they are "utterly devastated" on 30 October.

They stated: "We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family. There is so much to say, but right now, we're going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss."

They added: "In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty's family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world."

The actor sadly died last Saturday, apparently drowning in a jacuzzi at his $5million home.

Emergency services rushed to his home after receiving a call at 4.07pm that the star had suffered a cardiac arrest. But when they arrived, they reportedly found the star's lifeless body.

In the years before his passing, Matthew opened up about his health struggles, including a near-death experience.

One one horrific occasion his colon exploded, causing him to fall into a coma. Doctors told his family that he only had a 2% chance of survival, but Matthew beat the odds and woke up.

He then started his recovery journey, which included rehab visits.
