Meghan Markle’s first husband was ‘heartbroken’ when she ended their marriage – but now he may have had the last laugh.
The Duchess of Sussex, who married Prince Harry in May 2018, may never have even met King Charles III’s if her first marriage hadn’t come to an abrupt end.
Years before she joined the Royal Family, Meghan was married to film producer Trevor Engelson, who was said to be devastated when she ended things.
Trevor had supported Meghan through tough times in her early acting career and they tied the knot in 2011, but everything changed when she landed a role in TV legal drama Suits and moved hundreds of miles away to Toronto, Canada.
The pair divorced in 2013 citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ and it was reported that Meghan posted her wedding and engagement rings back to Engelson in LA.
Trevor reportedly felt the split had come completely out of the blue, but it seems like he got the ‘ultimate revenge’.

One of his friends told The Mail: “For a long time, things were difficult for Trevor. He’s a good guy but Meghan crushed him when she demanded a divorce. When she took up with Prince Harry, he was crushed all over again because he was constantly reminded of her because of the publicity around the marriage and then the drama of the Oprah interview. But that’s all in the past now.”
Trevor is now married to dietician Tracey Kurland, a multi-millionaire heiress who reportedly inherited $250 million when her father died in 2021.
They live in a huge LA estate with their two daughters, while his management and production company, Underground, represents many rising Hollywood stars.
His friend added: “Everyone in Trevor’s life knows not to mention the ‘M’ word. He’s moved on and, in some ways, you could say he’s having an even better life than Meghan. He probably has more money than she does now, he’s doing what he loves and he’s out of the spotlight. It’s the ultimate revenge.”

Engelson is said to be “one of the nicest guys in Hollywood” and has been on the picket lines during the Hollywood strike.
His life is very different now to the one he shared with Meghan, who he married in Jamaica after dating for seven years.
Unlike Harry, Trevor was said to have a great relationship with father-in-law Thomas Markle, who has spoken fondly of his daughter’s ex.
He explained: “I really liked Trevor. He got to know my mother and he was always so kind and supportive. He was a perfect gentleman to my daughter and treated me with great respect. When he asked for Meghan’s hand, I could not have been happier.
Meghan and Trevor’s sudden split was said to have left friends and family shocked.
According to the book Meghan: A Hollywood Princess by Andrew Morton, Princess Diana’s famous biographer, Meghan ended things by posting her wedding and engagement rings back to her ex.
In the book, Morton wrote: “A wealthy entrepreneur friend claimed that the marriage ended so abruptly that Meghan sent Trevor her diamond wedding and engagement rings back to him by registered mail. Another confirmed that the decision to end the marriage was made by Meghan and that it had come ‘totally out of the blue’.”
