Michael Caine has hinted that his latest movie The Great Escaper could be his last as he addressed retirement plans in a new interview.

In London on Wednesday night, the 90-year-old attended the premiere of his new film alongside his co-stars and long-term wife Shakira Caine.

For his appearance, he held onto his walking stick for support but mostly remained seated on the red carpet.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the actor addressed the possibility of his seven-decade-long career coming to an end.

Michael revealed he is “sort of” retired already due to his age and not being able to “walk properly”.

Reflecting on his 90 years, he added: “I’ve had the best possible life I could have thought of. The best possible wife, and the best possible family.

“They may not be a family that other people would say is the best possible family – but the best possible family for me.”

In Michael’s latest film, inspired by true events, he takes on the role of Bernard Jordan, a World War II veteran who escaped his care home to attend the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day landings in France.

The actor stars opposite the late Glenda Jackson, who plays his wife Irene.

Michael expressed concerns about his career potentially being over during the pandemic, until The Great Escaper came along.

He said of his latest role: “I was so happy to do it. I just loved the character of Bernie. I thought he was incredible, and it’s so beautifully written.”

Of his late co-star, who died in June, he said in a statement, obtained by Cover Media: “Glenda was one of our greatest movie actresses.

“It was a privilege to work with her on The Great Escaper recently, our second film together. It was a wonderful experience this time as it was 50 years ago”.

Michael has been reliant on a cane following a back operation due to spinal stenosis last year.

In April, his wife Shakira told the MailOnline he was “a strong man” who was recovering well from the surgery.

She added: “The operation was fantastic. He’ll be up and dancing again soon.”

The couple have been married for 50 years and they have a daughter together named Natasha, 50.

Michael also has a 65-year-old daughter with his first wife, English actress Patricia Haines.

The Great Escaper will be released in cinemas on 6 October 2023.
