Miley Cyrus and Keanu Reeves have something surprising in common: Both celebrities have terrifying ghost stories. And these two aren’t the only ones to share their spine-tingling experiences. Here are six real ghost stories from famous people.
For the legs of her European tours, Cyrus had an apartment in London, so she didn’t have to live out of hotels. Her place was a building that used to be a bakery. According to Cyrus, the place was so haunted that she had to move.
“I was having really crazy dreams and really scary things, and one night my little sister – it sounds crazy to tell you – but she was standing in the shower and all of a sudden I hear her scream,” she told Elle. “I run in there and the water had somehow flipped to hot but it was still… It wasn’t like the water had just changed, the knob had turned but she hadn’t turned it and it was burning her.”
This wasn’t the extent of her experience, though. One night, Cyrus saw a boy perched on the edge of her sink, swinging his feet.
“Liam [Hemsworth] had an experience, my mom had an experience, we all had these crazy experiences and it was terrifying,” she said.
Cher has a ghost story that’s a little sweeter. The singer believes that her ex-husband, Sonny Bono haunts her house. Per Today, she detailed this belief during a Reddit Q&A.
“I love ghosts,” the singer wrote. “I actually think that Sonny makes a light go on. I have a beautiful chandelier that he makes the light go on when it is impossible, there is no power on. I love ghosts, I prefer ghosts to some people.”
Matthew McConaughey explained to Screen Slam that he came across a ghost named Madame Bleu in his Hollywood home.
“She wasn’t that happy, it didn’t seem like she was going to be much fun to hang around or have in my house, so I went ahead and stood my ground,” he said. “I opened the door and said, ‘You can move around all you want, but I’m not going anywhere.’
He also said that guests to his house would comment on the ghost.
“For weeks everyone that came to the house said the same thing: ‘There’s someone down in that hall, there’s somebody down in that hall.’”
Though Ryan Gosling said he doesn’t believe in ghosts, he has an eerie story from his youth. The actor lived in Ontario when he saw a man in the house.
“He just sat,” Gosling told Esquire. “And I knew from a very young age that he was a ghost, too. He scared me. I told my mother, but she couldn’t see him. Nobody could. And I learned to live with that.”
His family soon became aware of the supernatural presence, however.
“Then, a few years later, she thought she saw him, then almost right away my cousin saw him, and then my uncle. And we were outta there in fairly short order.”
Lucy Liu’s ghost story has become a Hollywood legend. In 1999, the actor told Us Weekly that she had sex with a spirit.
“Some sort of spirit came down from God knows where and made love to me,” she explained.
She added: “It was sheer bliss. I felt everything. I climaxed. And then he floated away.”
According to Reeves, he saw a ghost when he was a child living in New York City.
“Renata, [our] nanny, is in the bedroom, my sister is asleep, she’s sitting over there, I’m hanging out,” Reeves shared on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “There was a doorway, and all of a sudden this jacket comes waving through the doorway, this empty jacket — there’s no body, there’s no legs, it’s just there. And then it disappears.”
Reeves said he wasn’t scared of the specter because he was so young.
“I was a little kid, and I thought, ‘Okay, that’s interesting,’ and I looked over at the nanny, and she [looked terrified]. And I’m like ‘Oh wow, so that was real.’”
