Queen Elizabeth meets Liz Truss on September 6, 2022
Before the Queen’s death was publicly announced on September 8, 2022, rumours about her worsening condition began to circulate earlier in the day. At the time, Piers Morgan, 58, was “sitting on a throne” and smoking a cigar in a royal-themed photoshoot.
He says he received a message from a colleague about the rumours, adding in his column: “The photographer had me sitting on a large red throne-like chair, chomping on a self-congratulatory cigar, for a mocked-up ‘King of TV’ theme.
“I immediately jumped off. ‘The Queen is either dead, or dying,’ I explained. ‘So, this shot is now very inappropriate.’”
The presenter added in The Sun that the room fell silent and he quickly left the photoshoot to rush to the TalkTV studio.
A few hours later, the former Good Morning Britain host was moved to tears when he received a call from a royal source confirming the Queen’s death.

At the time, Piers paid an emotional tribute to the royal, tweeting: “BREAKING NEWS: RIP Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 96.
“The greatest Monarch in history, and the greatest of Britons. Dignified, humble, wise, stoic, and dedicated to duty and service to the country she loved.
“Thank you for everything, Ma’am. We will be forever indebted to you.”
Elsewhere, Piers said “a little piece of us here in Britain died with her” and that he struggled to imagine the country without her.

He said on his TalkTV show: “The moment we’ve all been dreading has finally come.
“Tonight everything changes. Her death is not just an enormous blow to the British people but to our national psyche… She had an aura of invincibility that has sadly been shattered.
“Now we have to learn to live as a country without her.”
The first anniversary of her death will not be marked with an official public event.
King Charles is expected to spend the day “quietly and privately” at Balmoral. There are also no plans for a private gathering of the Royal Family.
In addition, the King and Queen Camilla are not due to attend any public engagements during the week of the anniversary.
