Meghan Markle is reportedly “frustrated” by Prince Harry’s desire to move from California to New York.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spent time in the Big Apple earlier this month, as they attended the World Mental Health Day Festival to host a discussion held by their Archewell Foundation about mental wellness in the digital age. And now a source has claimed that Prince Harry, 39, ‘really wants to move’ to the bustling city – with Meghan, 42, not so keen on the idea.
The pair currently live on the west coast of the USA – in Montecito, California – with their two children Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, two. But it was reported that Harry favoured a move to New York – on the east coast – as it meant it would be much easier for him to fly home to the UK for a long weekend if he wanted.
A royal insider, speaking to Heat magazine, said: “Meghan’s so happy to be back in California, she can’t imagine leaving. It would make zero sense to move, and she’s frustrated Harry won’t let this go.”
The source added: "The truth is he desperately misses London, and being in the city helps. Plus, he could easily go home for a long weekend if they lived in New York."
OK! has asked the Sussexes' representatives for comment on the claims.
It comes after a report last month suggested Prince Harry wanted to spend more time in the UK and wanted to have a permanent base back in Britain. According to an insider, the Duke was keen to make more regular trips to his homeland – particularly for charity work – but Meghan was not so keen.
Harry had reportedly asked to stay at Windsor Castle in September when he arrived in London for the WellChild Awards before travelling to Germany for the Invictus Games – but his request was rejected due to there not being enough space on short notice. The incident was understood to have made Harry more keen on securing a base in the UK.
Speaking to the Sunday Times, a source said: "Not having anywhere isn't overly helpful. There are friends and hotels, but I know they would like to have somewhere.
"Meghan seems to have decided that coming back more is not what she wants to do, but Harry would like to. Having a base in his home country, despite everything that has happened, is appealing.”
The couple previously lived at Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor estate, after it was gifted to them by the late Queen Eizabeth II. But earlier this year, the pair were asked to vacate the property by King Charles after they stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020.
The insider added that being allowed to keep Frogmore Cottage would have been ‘the perfect setup for them’ – with Harry said to be ‘sanguine but pretty sad’ about having to clear it out.
