Ricky Gervais trolls 'host-less' Oscars on Twitter

‘Was it something I said?’ Ricky Gervais trolls ‘host-less’ Oscars as he tweets infamous 2020 Golden Globes monologue that skewered A-list stars

The Academy Awards on Sunday was a very different show due to the COVID-19 pandemic and had no host or audience and just a handful of presenters and nominees.

But the reason for the changes didn’t stop British comedian and actor Ricky Gervais from the trolling the 2021 Oscars telecast.

‘It’s The Oscars tonight! I wasn’t invited. Was it something I said?’ he tweeted as he shared video from his no holds barred celebrity take down during his 2020 Golden Globes hosting gig.

The British star, 59, had warned the A-list audience at the Globes in January 2020 that he wouldn’t be hosting the show again and was set to take no prisoners.

And he went on to roast Hollywood with jokes about Leonardo DiCaprio’s penchant for dating much younger women and Felicity Huffman’s criminal conviction for her part in the college admissions scandal.

Gervais also joked about convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and the ‘perverts’ in the audience whom journalist Ronan Farrow might investigate.

The 2020 Globes was the fifth time Gervais had hosted the awards show that hands out trophies from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Ahead of time, he explained his modus operandi to The Hollywood Reporter.

‘That first time I did it, [I thought], ‘Do I pander to the 200 privileged egos in the room, or do I try and entertain a global audience of 200 million people sitting at home who aren’t winning awards?’, he said.

‘Well, no contest. I try and make it a spectator sport. I try and play the outsider. It would be nauseating for me to come out and go, ‘Hey, George, how you doing, thanks for letting me use your villa. Hey, Brad, see you tonight, yeah?’ It’s horrible,’ he went on.

‘I’ve got to be the bloke sitting at home who shouldn’t have been invited. That’s who I’ve got to be.’

Back at work: The comedian and actor has been busy filming a third season of his Netflix series After life
