Sean “Diddy” Combs will be honored with the Global Icon Award and perform at next month’s VMAs, which will air live on Tuesday, September 12 at 8 PM ET/PT from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Combs’ more-than-three-decade-long career has included two #1 albums on the Billboard 200 and five #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. His performance at the VMAs will be his first at the awards show since 2005.
In addition to receiving the Global Icon Award, Diddy is also nominated for four other awards this year for his work on “Creepin” (Remix) and “Gotta Move On.” His nominations include two for “Best Collaboration,” as well as “Best Rap” and “Best R&B.”

The Global Icon Award, originally from MTV’s Europe Music Awards (EMAs), celebrates an artist or band whose unparalleled career and continued influence have achieved a unique level of global success in music and beyond. Diddy also hosted MTV Europe Music Awards 2002 at the Palazzo Sant Jordi, Barcelona, Spain.
His anticipated new R&B album The Love Album: Off the Grid will be released on September 15, marking his return to music since his critically acclaimed solo album Last Train to Paris in 2010.
Last year’s Golden Icon Award went to the Red Chili Peppers.
