Shane MacGowan’s wife Victoria, who’d been in a relationship with the singer for almost four decades at the time of his death, revealed on Instagram how much The Fairytale of New York star tried to avoid saying goodbye during his life. Taking to the app, she shared a throwback photo of herself with Shane, who was carrying a black-stalked red rose between his teeth, and captioned it: “Tomorrow is Shane’s funeral which is hard to believe and probably I won’t believe it for a while.
“Shane hated funerals and he refused to go to them with a few rare exceptions. So it’s incredible to think that so many people want to come to his and that so many beautiful people are pouring their hearts and souls into making it magnificent and magical and memorable for him and for us who are left behind,” she enthused.
“I am feeling my heart bursting open in all directions with the amount of love that is being showered on us.” She added that the consideration they’ve received is especially meaningful to her, because “everyone has their own problems and challenges and everyone has their own loved ones who they need to look after [too.]”
“I feel that Shane is with me all the time and that he is feeling intense appreciation and gratitude and that he is still sending love to everyone and maybe in a more powerful way from where he is now,” she added poignantly. “I couldn’t have possibly asked for a more precious and enduring love affair as a human and I got so much from my relationship with Shane that it would be greedy to want more!”
Shane and Victoria first met in a pub when she was aged just 16, but they didn’t begin dating for a further four years. The couple then opted not to marry until 2018, when she was in her 50s and Shane had just turned 60.

The pair remained in love until the end, although their turbulent relationship wasn’t without its problems.
She once joked that, despite a recommendation from Johnny Depp that having children would be the making of them, she was too scared that the accident-prone star might “set them on fire” if she did conceive.
He’d previously set John Belushi’s bungalow at the Chateau Marmont hotel alight on one occasion, after dropping a cigarette.
However, Victoria has now offered poignant words of advice for those facing difficulties in their own relationships.

“I would love to say to anyone who is in a relationship with someone who has problems with addiction or anxiety or depression to please get healing and help for yourself, and to take care of yourself and you will find that it gives you the strength to keep going and to be able to enjoy your love,” she urged.
“And to anyone who is in fear of losing someone just know that millions of angels are watching you and supporting you.
“And if you don’t want to come to the funeral Shane would definitely understand, he wouldn’t want to go either!
“But if you want to remember him, the next time you see a homeless person stop and give them your time and your compassion and your respect and treat them like a brother or a sister,” she passionately concluded.
She was inundated with messages from supporters who vowed that Shane would live on in the hearts of music lovers “forever”, and the post attracted over 14,000 likes in just a few hours.
Shane died last month aged 65, after months of health struggles, which included bravely battling brain condition encephalitis, and a bout of shingles which spread to his eye.
Shane’s funeral will take place in Tipperary tomorrow (December 8), following a horse-drawn carriage procession in the streets of Dublin – and well-wishers are welcome to attend.
