Sarah Wolf, 44, is a freelance PR consultant. She lives in Somerset with her daughter, Bella, 14. Sarah says:
One morning in January 2016, I woke up suffering heart palpitations and visited by GP. As she measured my blood pressure she said: ‘You’re fat. What are you doing to do about it?’ I the left the surgery in tears, but she did me a favour. Two days later I walked into my local Slimming World class.
‘I’d been a chubby child then put weight on at university. My first husband and I were typical DINKYS (Double Income No Kids Yet) and were constantly eating out, then my little girl, Bella, arrived in 2005.
Two years later my marriage ended. Every life event saw me pile on more weight.
When I stepped on the scales and saw 19st 10lb I burst into tears but my consultant Sarah reassured me that that was the last time I’d see that figure. It was.
I was so determined. I stopped drinking alcohol — such a waste of calories — started cooking healthy meals from scratch. Week after week I lost a couple of pounds.
Soon I was counting my weight loss in stones — and then in whole people! I feels strange thinking I was walking around all those years, basically carrying another grown woman. No wonder I was having palpitations.
I haven’t looked back. I’m so active. I love wild swimming and climbing mountains. I’m in a new relationship and my daughter is so proud of me. I’m proud of me too. Some people lose weight for others, but I did it for me.

Lucie Hadley, 21, works with children with special needs. She lives in Peterborough with her parents and boyfriend, Sam. She says:
I’ve put on a stone a year since I was seven, and was bullied horrendously. I was called names and had food thrown at me. I became a very angry, lonely little girl and was often in trouble at school. At home, I’d spend the evening in my bedroom bingeing in secret.
As I approached my 20th birthday I realised how much of my teenage life I’d missed out on. I’d never travelled anywhere or done anything active or fun.
I was 19st I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life like this. I joined Slimming World in May 2017 — joining my mum, who’d joined three months earlier. On the day I joined, it took about ten minutes to pluck up courage to go through the door.
Slimming World is all about cooking differently and thinking about food differently. I knew I had an overeating problem so I spent a lot of time with my consultant learning about portion control and listening to my body when I was full.
By the September I’d lost six stone and friends couldn’t believe the difference. I got to my goal weight in October 2018, dropping from a size 24 to a size 8.
It means I’ve lost half my previous body weight. When I see that weight standing next to me, in the form of Kate Winslet, I realise what a fantastic achievement it is.
Losing so much has given me confidence in every part of my life. I have pushed myself further in my career and I’ve been more adventurous when it comes to going out — I’ve even been to a waterpark and done jet-skiing and trampolining.
I even love clothes shopping again. I’ll never Kate Winslet’s budget when it comes to buying dresses, but now I feel just as glamorous as her.

Penelope Wyper, 36, is a Slimming World consultant. She is pictured before her weight loss
Penelope Wyper, 36, is a Slimming World consultant.
She lives in Southampton with partner Gary, 47, a multi-trader and their children Eden, seven and Darcie, 21 months.
Growing up in a house where money was tight, we didn’t have the healthiest of diets. Meals were cheap, processed food and we’d all be encouraged to clear our plates. By 12, I was already overweight. As an adult, I just ate and ate …
The turning point came when Gary and I started thinking about starting a family. I wanted to be the best version of me, not the overweight, anxious person I saw in the mirror.
When I stood on the scales at Slimming World, I was so disappointed with myself. But, with ironic timing, two weeks later I discovered I was pregnant. But was no reason to go back to my old ways.
The Slimming World plan is perfectly safe to follow when you’re pregnant. So by the time I’d had Eden, I was actually two stone four pounds lighter than when I’d conceived.
I’ve learned to eat in moderation, and cook in a healthy way — it’s a good example to set my children. I’m so much fitter and healthier — the mum I wanted to be. The other day I saw a friend who hadn’t seen me for a few years and he didn’t recognise me!
Now I’m Slimming World consultant myself. I’ve got 350 members — who knows what glamorous people I’ll help them lose along the way?

Losing Liz is the best thing that happened to me

Carleanne O’Donoghue, 27, is a content manager from Finchley, North London. She says:
When I was younger, I was always the tall one in class but at some point I stopped growing upwards and started growing outwards.
By university, my weight crept up thanks to a combination of not exercising and eating all the wrong foods.
My confidence destroyed, I loathed going out and feeling like ‘the fat friend’ of the group.
I was even abused in the street by strangers, I tried to accept this was how life was, and made jokes about my size, but inside I was crying.
It was when I lost my nan suddenly in 2016 that my life hit rock bottom. I was so miserable that at one point, I found myself stepping out into a busy main road.
I didn’t want anything to happen to me but I really didn’t care if it did. That scared me and I rang my GP who referred me for counselling. I realised I had to make changes to my life.
Mum had lost weight with Slimming World before so I thought I’d give it a go. On the first day, I was shocked to find out I weighed over 20st. The plan has re-educated how I think about food and nutrition. I had no idea how to feed myself properly.
In my first week I lost two pounds and within two or three weeks I’d lost half a stone. The moral support from the rest of the group was invaluable. When I lost eight stones, I joked with everyone in my group that I’d lost a Kardashian.
Now I’ve lost ten stones — at least a Liz Hurley, with some to spare! It feels strange seeing the weight I’ve lost standing beside me, as a whole person.
It took me 18 months to the weight, my life has changed in so many ways. My confidence has soared.
I’ve sought — and got — pay rises and promotions at work. Last year I started a relationship a lovely man. I’ve never met Liz, but it feels amazing to have lost her.

Shannon Dixon, 43, works as a healthcare assistant.
She lives in London with husband Paul and their son Kaylen, three. She says:
I’ve always wanted children but was told I couldn’t have them due to my weight. Paul and I tried and failed so many times: In the last five years we spent around £30,000 on IVF and we’ve lost nine pregnancies in total, each one as devastating as the next.
Four years ago I’d had enough. I couldn’t take any more IVF, both the physical and emotional impact was enormous. Plus, as a healthcare professional, I felt such a hypocrite.
I was constantly advising people on looking after themselves, and there I was — standing there, often weighing as much as both of us put together!
I joined a friend at Slimming World in 2015. It was not long after yet another miscarriage and I was heartbroken.
I suspected I weighed about 18 stone so I got a real shock when I saw it was closer to 22st. Something inside me changed. I wanted a baby and if losing weight was a way to do that, then nothing was going to stop me.
I lost a stone in a month. Then something strange happened. My sense of smell became really acute. I could smell a strawberry soap in the bathroom, from downstairs.
Paul said to me: ‘You’re pregnant! Have you done a pregnancy test?’ I did — seven of them, actually, to absolutely sure — and they all came out positive.
I’ve never felt so emotional in my life.
‘Obviously, the weight loss had helped me. I worked with my midwife, and followed the Slimming World plan throughout the pregnancy.
Kaylen was born in June 2016, a healthy baby boy. Over the next 15 months I lost over eight and a half stone. When I got on the scales and saw I’d reached goal weight, everyone burst into applause. My consultant welled up too. I am literally half the size I was — a whole 8st woman lighter.
I’ve maintained my weight loss. I love having the energy to keep up with my three-year-old. I’m now a size 12-14 rather than a size 28 I can chase after Kaylen, no problem at all!
