Why Princess Beatrice’s daughter has a title but Princess Eugenie’s sons don’t

In the UK, there are several specific rules that explain which members of the Royal Family are entitled to hold a prince or princess title.

Many of these rules date from Letters Patent by King George V in 1917, where he wrote that all the children of the sovereign, the male-line grandchildren and the Prince of Wales’s eldest son were all allowed to hold a princely title.

While Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie both have titles as they are male-line granddaughters of the late Queen, their children are not entitled to become a Prince or Princess. However, this is not to say that they aren't eligible to hold other aristocratic titles in other countries.

Both of the York Princesses have children. Princess Eugenie has two sons, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank (born February 9, 2021) and Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank (born May 30, 2023) and Princess Beatrice's daughter, Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, arrived on September 18, 2021.

While August and Ernest have no royal or noble titles of their own, Sienna does have an official style thanks to her father's aristocratic family background. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi is a descendant of Italian nobility and holds the title of a count, and as a result, passes titles down to his children.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Edoardo's father, Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi, explained: “Edoardo is the only male descendent taking the family into the next generation. He is a count, his wife will be a countess automatically and any of their children will be counts or nobile donna.”

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are the daughters of the Duke and Duchess of York and are male-line granddaughters of the late Queen, making them both eligible to hold the style of a princess.

Unlike their royal cousins, Prince William and Prince Harry, their spouses were not allowed to take on a new royal title when they married.

Princess Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank on October 12, 2018 at St George's Chapel, Windsor and is known officially as Mrs Jack Brooksbank. Princess Beatrice had an intimate service at the Royal Chapel of All Saints when she married Edoardo on July 17, 2020.

As well as August, Ernest and Sienna, there is another youngster in the York family – Edoardo's son from a previous relationship, Christopher Woolf Mapelli Mozzi (fondly known in his family as 'Wolfie'). Princess Beatrice also has a sweet name for her step son as she has been heard referring to him as her "bonus son".

Wolfie joined his father, Princess Beatrice and the rest of the Royal Family in the royal box for the Platinum Pageant in June 2022 which marked the end of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations and was spotted playing with the other youngsters.

Wolfie, who is Edo's son from his relationship with US architect Dara Huang, has rarely been seen in public but it has previously been reported that he has joined the other royals for events in the past, including past Easter and Christmas services in Windsor and Sandringham.
