WHEN it comes to keeping our kids safe, many parents worry about busy public outings like Halloween.
To guide nervous families and make them feel a bit more comfortable on the big night out, one mom-fluencer shared her tips.
As a mom of two under two and an expert at all things parenting hacks, Helga Brauer (@the_useful_mom) knows how hectic things can get around the holidays.
Halloween, in particular, can be stressful for parents who want their little ones to experience the magic of the kid-centric evening while still ensuring they are safe on the crowded streets.
In an exclusive interview with The U.S. Sun, Helga warned against certain costumes, revealing her safety concerns.
“I try to steer clear of any costumes that cover the face,” she advised.
While a Batman, Ninja Turtle, or Power Ranger moment might seem like a good idea, Helga thinks you should opt for something a little less disguised.
“Unless you have your kid in a stroller, they could get away from you and then you’ll be looking for a kid with his face covered. That’s a lot harder to find.”
She also said dark colors in general aren’t best.
“Those are a little harder to spot once it gets late. Stick to whites or bright colored outfits.”

As for one of her favorite costumes?
“We’re going as a family of unicorns.”
The brilliant, eye-catching colors and stand-out props – like a horn atop one's head – make it a safe bet.
A few accessories that will ensure your child stays close by and in sight can also be considered when picking out their ensembles.
“If it goes with their costume, something I really love is a headlamp.”
A construction worker or a Lightning McQueen fit would look good with the bright accessory.
“You could also use glow sticks, LED bracelets, reflective tape, or they even sell pumpkin flashlights – those are all fun for your kids to wear or carry around,” she said about the items that all cost under $20.
Although she knows many parents aren’t a fan of kid leashes, she thinks Halloween is a good time as any to use them.
Her $14 favorite is one that requires a key on the child’s end, so they can’t take off running.
If you want one that works with a costume, however, Helga recommended the $18 stuffed animal backpacks that have a leash hanging from behind them.
“Better a kid on a leash than a kid gone missing.”
And finally, her last safety precaution is one she called “obvious”: AirTags.
“You can put it in their pocket or sew it into the lip of their shoe.”

While Helga wants her kids to enjoy the holiday and admits she tries to be relaxed and fun on special nights like Halloween, she knows safety comes first.
“Just remember to be vigilant, accompany your young ones to the doors, and don’t let your kids go into anyone’s house.”
