They say that with age comes wisdom and it’s true that as we get older, there are some things we simply do not want to deal with any more.

Whether it’s the drinking antics you got up to as a student or being involved in countless petty arguments, people from around the world have taken to Reddit to share a long list of things they no longer care for as older adults.

A user who goes by XmasJ, started the Ask Reddit thread, by saying: ‘What are you simply getting too old for?’ and the question prompted over 2,500 responses.

One of the top comments with more than 2,000 upvotes was ‘arguing with other people’.

The user wrote ‘It makes me think of Keanu Reeves. He gave an interview about growing older, and said he protects his peace by refusing to argue with anyone about anything. He said “2+2 is 5? You are correct. Have a nice day”.’

Drama and arguments

Another agreed, adding ‘Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for discussions/debates…but no one does that.

‘People don’t listen, they wait until it’s their turn to speak, and then they shout their opinion…facts/science be damned…’

Similarly, someone else said they’re too old to deal with ‘drama’ and nearly 900 others agreed.

The original poster said ‘Unfortunately, there’s always people who never matured emotionally and act like permanent high school students.

‘I agree though, there’s not even time for one’s own issues let alone the personal drama of others.’

Someone else shared what helped them realise this and gave them the freedom to be themselves.

They questioned ‘How often do you think about other people’s mistakes and dumb actions? Never?

‘That’s how often people think or care about you. People are self centered and almost everyone suffers from main character syndrome, can’t blame them, we’re all the exact center of the observable universe.’

Hangovers and drinking

It’s a common myth that hangovers get worse with age and according to this Reddit thread, it’s true.

Gone are the days where you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go again, in older age the dreaded hangover can take you out for days.

One Redditor wrote ‘Hangovers, 3 days to go back to normal is too much now and not worth it.’

Someone else added ‘They’ve gotten worse as I’ve gotten older. In my 20s they’d be bad for a few hours after I woke up or at worst, all day.

‘Now, the actual “hangover” might last the next day, but then I’ll just kinda feel s***** for the next few days. I’ll sleep bad and have a low grade headache I can’t get rid of. It affects my sleep which snowballs into feeling s*****from that.’

Others sympathised: ‘Omg YES. I can’t do it anymore’ and ’41 here. My hangovers are so bad now, it’s about to make me stop drinking’.

Eating food that’s ‘not delicious’

As drinking goes out the window for some, the standard of food we consume gets higher.

One user explained that they’re too old for ‘Eating food that’s not delicious. And I don’t mean eating unhealthily.

‘I mean, If I’m going to consume calories, it’s going to be delicious. Sometimes that means heating things up in the oven instead of microwave, or adding an extra ingredient that makes the dish.’

Someone else added ‘This is a good one. I feel my repertoire of what I cook for myself is much more limited now, than when I was younger.

‘But thinking about it I’ve learnt a few simple things or techniques that are relatively quick and easy, relatively healthy, really tasty.

‘Give me a whole afternoon on weekend when I’ve nothing better to do, or guests etc. and I’ll happily go back into making whatever, but if it’s just me and I can make something delicious and healthy in 20 minutes, why try harder?’

Events starting past 9pm

Late nights become more and more rare as you get older, with one user in the thread ruling out ‘anything starting past 9pm’.

Another joked ‘In my case, I’d like to be home by 9, thanks,’ with someone else writing ‘Youngsters. How about home by 7 bed by 8.’

Someone else added ‘I wish I could convey this more often to people. Anything that requires me to be out past 9pm is an inconvenience.’

One user explained that concerts were becoming off the cards: ‘I went to a concert where the doors opened at 10.30pm and the headliner came in just after midnight last weekend.

‘It was an immense effort just to stay awake the entire time.’

Concerts without assigned seating

As well as starting too late, concerts are also off the table for older adults when you have to queue and stand for a long time.

Someone wrote ‘Concerts without assigned seating. I’m not showing up hours early to get a good spot and then be stuck there the entire time without being able to sit or use the bathroom or else I lose my view.’

Another advised that paying more for VIP is the way to go – ‘I did VIP pass at a festival a couple months ago and I don’t know if I could ever go back to GA. Just the bathroom situation alone was like night and day.

‘I also don’t think I can pay $3,000 for that again so I may just be done with festivals.’

Someone else said ‘My favorite band is touring but they keep doing these general admission/standing room only shows.

‘I just can’t do it anymore. I have some nerve damage in my leg and can’t stand for hours on end’.

Lack of sleep

One older adult claims that while all-nighters were ‘once manageable,’ now when they stay up all night they are ‘useless’ the next day.

Someone else chimed in with ‘I feel like all nighters have always destroyed my next day. I’m just smart enough to realize that it’s not worth it anymore.

‘Also, I have way more responsibilities than I did when I was a teenager staying up all night playing games.’

Others agreed, writing ‘SAME! I can’t pull an all-nighter. Even -1 hour and I’m sluggish and cranky’ and ‘Yes!! Not only am I useless, but everything going on in my life seems 20x more blown out of proportion’.

Social media

Finally, some Redditors claim that with age they no longer care for social media, writing that they would ‘Rather meet face to face’.

Others said ‘Deactivated facebook. Don’t miss it at all’ and ‘This is me. I just don’t need that kind kinda validation anymore and I’m happily thriving without.’

The original poster responded ‘Social media seems less about connecting with people these days, than it is about spreading propaganda and misinformation.

‘I wouldn’t even trust anyone I met online. Interacting with people in real life is still the tried and true way to make actual friends you can trust.’
