Beauty staple ‘improves hair growth’ and ‘prevents breakage’, claim experts

Dr Amir: Tips for dealing with hair loss

Almost half of all women will experience hair loss at some point in their lives for various reasons.

Most women will experience it in their fifties and sixties but it can happen at any age.

Preventing hair loss and keeping your hair and scalp healthy can feel like a daunting task, especially if you’ve been following the same hair care routine for years.

One way people can improve their hair and scalp health is by using vitamin E. Some experts claim vitamin E has a positive impact on your hair’s health and can even help hair growth.

Vitamin E is known for protecting and maintaining youthful skin and now it seems the beauty aisle favourite is being used on hair and scalps.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant and hydrator that benefits hair by boosting scalp health, stimulating hair growth and increasing strength and shine.

It’s also perfect for anyone with dry, breakable hair or a scalp that’s been previously damaged.

Dr Kim Nichols, a board-certified dermatologist, cosmetic surgeon, and founding director of NicholsMD, told Prevention.com that vitamin E acts as a conditioner when it’s applied to the scalp as it can “hydrate” and “rejuvenate” a dry, flaky scalp.

She also said when it’s applied all over the head, it can help to “boost shine” and “prevent hair breakage”.

As vitamin E is an antioxidant, it can help with hair growth and hair loss by “reducing oxidative stress in the scalp”.

Gretchen Friese, a BosleyMD-certified trichologist in Colorado, told Byrdie that vitamin E oil can also reduce cell damage and “improve hair growth”.

The powerful vitamin can stimulate the capillaries in your scalp which increases blood flow, also encouraging hair growth.

Friese claimed vitamin E oil can also prevent hair breakage as well as assist hair growth.

It should be noted that vitamin E oil should not be used by people with sensitive scalps, people with thyroid issues or those undergoing chemotherapy.

Vitamin E oil can be bought online or from health and beauty stores.
