Christmas celebrations can now truly kick off as Coca-Cola is set to release its Holidays Are Coming advert today.

Fans of the drinks brand can rejoice in the infamous jingle that’s sure to evoke the Yuletide spirit – as psychology expert has revealed why so many of us revel in its nostalgia, following research from the company which shows that nearly half (44 per cent) of Brits mark it the official start of the holiday season.

The highly anticipated ad starts with with a young boy running to ring a bell in the middle of a snowy evening.

This alerts his town to the droves of lit-up Coca-Cola trucks driving into the centre as crowds gather to marvel at the exciting display. Bright lights and music fill the square and onlookers soak up the atmosphere.

In one heartfelt moment, a father lifts his daughter up on his shoulders and they both share a smile watching the trucks go by as the excitable jingle plays in the background.

Coca-Cola’s much loved ad has been ushering in the Christmas atmosphere for more than two decades.

Now, a Behavioural Psychologist has revealed how the notoriously catchy jingle has cemented it in our hearts.

‘This new research by Coca-Cola shows the power music can have on human minds and emotions,’ Jo Hemmings explained.

‘What could be seen as a simple piece of music, in fact, has many complexities that have allowed it to remain so meaningful to so many.

‘As soon as viewers hear the first opening bells, it instantly boosts their mood, and people may not realise that there is a much deeper meaning behind this.

‘Known as “earworms”, this is where a familiar and nostalgic tune gets stuck in our mind, especially when the song is catchy and repetitive, as we’ve seen with the “Holidays Are Coming” jingle.’

The brand found that more than half (67 per cent) felt the famous jingle gets stuck in their heads, with over a third finding themselves singing it one to three times a day.

Meanwhile, some 24 per cent think of ‘warm, cosy nights during winter’ thanks to the ad, which also ‘takes 22 per cent of us back to our childhood’.

It also sparks a rush of nostalgia (29 per cent), happiness (27 per cent) and warmth (20 percent) across all generations.

‘This familiarity is something that bridges the gap between past and present,’ Jo added.

‘And with the song referencing many classically Christmas sounds, it allows consumers to feel a sense of childhood, instantly triggering one of our “happy hormones”, dopamine.

‘This is a key part of our brain’s reward system and is associated with anticipation, memory, and pleasant feelings. Putting that into perspective, when the advert is played throughout the Christmas season, viewers are getting a consistent hit of dopamine, meaning their relationship with the advert gets stronger over time.’

The Holidays are Coming advert is also usually synonymous with the brand’s beloved Christmas Truck Tour that is typically announced towards the end of November.

It usually features a 14-tonne lorry decorated with fairy lights giving out free cans of the fizzy drink around the country.

In addition to the ‘Holidays are Coming’ advert, Coca-Cola will also launch its new 2023 Christmas campaign, ‘The World Needs More Santas’ on November 17 in Great Britain.

Its aim is to encourage celebrating ‘the spirit of Santa Claus in all of us’ by being helpful and generous.

Elodie Peribere, Director of Marketing at Coca-Cola Great Britain, said: ‘We’re delighted to share our Christmas celebration plans for Great Britain, with not one but two adverts to kick-start the festive season.

‘Our beloved “Holidays Are Coming” advert will be back this year as it remains a cherished and much-loved part of Christmas for Brits.

‘We are also delighted to launch our new advert for 2023, “The World Needs More Santas”, which we hope inspires consumers across the UK to find their ‘inner Santa Claus’ this festive period.’
