The act of removing make-up before bed is regarded as a crucial step in maintaining a healthy skincare routine.

Failing to do so may result in waking up with a lackluster complexion, potential breakouts, wrinkles, or even the risk of infection.

Yet a number of celebrities have confessed to defying good skincare practice, instead opting to sleep in a full face of makeup – often to look good first thing in the morning.

The latest addition to this list is Dolly Parton, who recently revealed she has been sleeping in her makeup every night for decades in case of an ’emergency’.

And there are other notable figures who also commit the cardinal skin sin.

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian will often wake up wearing last night’s makeup – as she admitted at the 2015 InStyle Awards

Kim Kardashian has a team of MUAs ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.

But sometimes the reality star would rather wake up wearing last night’s makeup – as she admitted at the 2015 InStyle Awards.

Kim was presenting the Makeup Artist of the Year award to Charlotte Tilbury, who she revealed was the one who first put her on to the trick of waking up first thing in the morning with makeup already applied.

‘She’s inspired me when I am really lazy and I can’t do my make-up the next day, so I’ll sleep in my make-up,’ Kim explained, as reported by The Cut.

‘I know that’s probably the worst advice, but she has all the magic creams to put on the next day to make up for it.’

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore likes to apply eyeliner before she goes to bed to achieve a sultry, slept-in look the following morning.

‘After I do my evening skincare routine, I line my outer lower lashes with soft-black pencil – usually [her brand] Flower That’s So Kohl – before I go to bed,’ the actress told Allure.

‘It sounds a little crazy, but I wake up with the perfect smudgy eye makeup. I can roll out of bed, do absolutely nothing, and get compliments on my makeup.’

Kristen Stewart

Actress Krissten Stewart says she never take off her eyeliner or mascara when she goes to bed because it ‘looks so good the next day’

Beauty muse Kristen Stewart is renowned for her smoky eyes and mussed-up hairstyles.

The Twilight actress admitted to British Vogue in 2014 that she ‘doesn’t really know’ how to do her own makeup, but her key products are mascara and black eyeliner.

‘There’s a pencil that you can get at Topshop that’s cheap, so I’ll get, like, five of them… I do both the top and bottom line and then just smudge it with my finger,’ she said.

‘If I’m being responsible, I’ll wash my face, but I never take off my eyeliner or my mascara because it looks so good the next day. It’s a continuous thing; I think I’ve never really had clean eyes.’

Claudia Winkleman

Claudia Winkleman revealed she never takes off her signature smokey eye make-up before going to bed

Despite being frowned upon by skin specialists, Claudia Winkleman confessed to consistently sleeping with her makeup on, during an interview with Prima.

‘I don’t want to denounce any myths but I’ve never taken my makeup off before going to bed and I’m 47. Never done it,’ the presenter revealed.

‘And I have much better dreams with shedloads of eye makeup on.’

Claudia also said she uses Environ moisturiser to keep her skin soft and replenished.

Priscilla Presley

Priscilla Presley never went makeup-free in front of husband Elvis during their six-year marriage.

‘[Elvis] taught me, even in having a relationship, about always having a mystique -never revealing everything. There are things you keep to yourself,’ she said during an appearance on Loose Women.

‘Some can’t have the truth. I always had a little bit of makeup… Men don’t want to see what a woman has to go through to get where she is, they want to see the product, the result.’

Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton revealed she has been sleeping in her makeup every night for decades in case of an ’emergency’

Dolly Parton recently revealed she has been sleeping in her makeup every night for decades in case of an ’emergency’.

The Hollywood actress, 77, admitted that she chooses to sleep in a full face of glam in case she’s spotted by unexpected photographers in the streets.

In her new book, Behind The Seams: My Life In Rhinestones, Dolly confessed the habit began in the 1980s.

She wrote: ‘When I arrived in LA in the 80s, I started sleeping with my makeup on, partly because of the earthquakes’.

What is the long-term damage to your skin from sleeping with make-up on?

Dematologist Dr Natalie Blakely of the Light Touch Clinic Surrey previously told FEMAIL: ‘Sleep is the time when our body rejuvenates. ‘The cells will be recovering and turning over. The normal process should allow for old skin to slough off and new skin to replace it.

‘Leaving make up on at night means that the the skin is less able to rejuvenate. In the short term when you wake up, the skin will be unclean, and dull looking.

‘Leaving foundations on also means that the pores are likely to be blocked leaving to the skin prone to spots and blackheads.’

What might worry some even more is that failing to clean your face before bed could lead to premature ageing.

‘Clean fresh skin is much more able to rejuvenate through skin cell turn over, than dirty, clogged up skin,’ she explained.

‘The overnight rejuvenation that occurs as we sleep is vitally important to how we age. As we sleep, our stress hormone cortisol reduces.

‘Too much cortisol can lead to thinning and discoloured skin. We also increase growth hormones that help the skin make more collagen and elastin – the building blocks of the skin.

‘Going to bed with dirty skin will inhibit some of these things from happening so our skin, over time, is not so plumped or hydrated.’

She added that even the act of washing your face can be anti-aging in itself.

‘I love to vigorously scrub my skin as this stimulates blood supply to the skin, bringing nutrients to the skin, helping to keep skin youthful and fresh,’ she said.

‘I thought, ‘I’m not heading out on the streets without makeup in case there are cameras out there! I’m going to be ready to go!”

Although she sleeps in her full face of makeup, Dolly admitted that she makes sure to properly clean her face in the morning, before reapplying another layer.

She added: ‘It doesn’t matter when you clean your face as long as you clean it once a day. After I wake up, I do all the little rituals, and then I start over again and go out every day and look good all day long.’

‘This is also true back home in Tennessee. I don’t want to go to bed looking like a hag with Carl

Carl Thomas Dean and Dolly tied the knot in 1966 in a small ceremony after they met two years prior.
