Emily Blunt stars as a frontierswoman settling the Old West in 1890 in “The English” — but she says that she doesn’t like her own chances of making it back then.
“I don’t think I would do well,” she told us at the premiere at the Metrograph.
“Who would want to live back then? What would I eat? What about laundry? I don’t know about hunting for a rabbit and then skinning it.”
And her experience on the set wouldn’t be much help, either.
“I don’t know how to use an arrow and bow, [although] I can pose and act like I do.”
But it sounds like she would appreciate the change to her beauty routine the era would offer: She ditched her makeup bag while shooting the six-part Prime Video series, she told us, and just “used extra sunscreen.”
“I do like the down-and-dirty [settings] when I film for a movie or series,” the mom of two said. “I like when you don’t have to look perfect all the time. That’s more fun for me, anyway.”
Meanwhile, Blunt praised writer Hugo Blick for coming up with a complex role.
“He wrote such an extraordinary female character. She is the damsel not in distress and he wrote such a nuanced and dexterous part for me that I was always astonished with every script that came in,” she told us.
She said that she sometimes says of her characters in the development stages of movies, “People can be fallible but no woman has to be the feminine ideal all the time. Let’s mess her up a bit. Let’s make it more interesting.”
But she says on this occasion, “I didn’t have to do any of that.”
“The English” premiered Nov. 11 on Prime Video.
