It’s become something of an issue for a woman who never expected to be Queen.
There’s never been a balance problem in the past – she was perfectly happy on horseback, after all – but Camilla, now 76, has found herself a little troubled in recent times with the unfamiliar business of clambering out of formal carriages.
She seemed discomfited, too, when struggling to alight the plane at Paris for the recent state tour of France, battling with a hat, a bag and a gusty wind.
It can’t help that the new Queen now spends comparatively little time in heels , preferring comfy shoes where possible.
It’s true that there are carriage footmen to grab on to in case the wobbles strike .
Now that she is Queen, however, a new solution has arisen – one first spotted at Tuesday’s State Opening of Parliament.
As the Diamond Jubilee state coach pulled up, a footman stepped forward with a bespoke portable handrail – a particularly helpful innovation as no one must touch Her Majesty unless she offers her hand first.
So, while servants stand at the ready ‘in catching positions’, it looks as though Camilla’s dignity has been preserved.

In the past she may have relied on footmen to steady herself, now that Camilla is Queen the ‘do not touch’ rule applies. Which is where the bannister comes in
