A man has caused a debate after admitting to walking out on a date without paying his portion of an $80 bill because his potential love interest was ‘constantly on her phone’.
The man, who is from a major US city, revealed he met up with the woman after matching on a dating app.
The pair hit it off and decided to meet in person – but it all went wrong very quickly as his date had the attention span of a ‘gnat’.
Taking to Reddit forum r/pettyrevenge, the unnamed man said his lunch quickly fell flat as the woman was constantly on her phone.
‘I try to open things but she sits there texting for five minutes while we’re waiting for our order, occasionally apologising,’ he explained.

Many users took to the thread supporting the man’s decisions, congratulating him on playing ‘the reverse Uno card’ on a date who was ‘there to get a free dinner’.
The unlucky dater kicked off the post by describing himself as coming from the ‘traditional school of dating protocol’, elaborating how he likes to make the person he meets feel safe regardless of chemistry.
He added: ‘It’s like, we both made the effort to get dressed up, look nice, come out, give each other a chance…
‘If it doesn’t exactly work out, you want to respect that someone accepted your invitation and tried.’
However, things quickly went awry after meeting in person with a woman he had sparked a connection with from a dating app.
The man was quick to brand the woman as a ‘vapid moral monstrosity’ who has the ‘attention span of a gnat’, after she spends a whole five minutes ferociously texting as they waited for their food.
When they finally began to chat she was quick to yet again, start answering her ‘buzzing’ phone once more.
The man attempted to make a few hints to his date about her antisocial behaviour by joking and even saying he would throw the phone out of the window if it continued.
However, his incessant hints fall on deaf ears as her eyes continue to be glued to her phone screen.
An appetizer and two drinks later, the man realises he is miserable and there is no possible way to turn this date around.
He heads to the toilet, promising himself that if her eyes are still locked on her phone screen then he will be making a swift exit out of the door.
When he comes out to find her eye fixed fixed on the screen, he validates that promise quickly leaving.
He detailed: ‘I look the other way and there’s a service door open behind the kitchen. I turn right instead of left and exit into the sweet, sweet air of freedom.’
It was only 30 minutes after he had left the date even realised his absence, texting him: ‘Did you leave?’
While some scolded him for ‘dining and dashing’, with some even accusing him of stealing from the restaurant to scold the woman, the overwhelming majority supported the man lumping his date with an $80 tab.
One commented: ‘Good for you brother. I love some sweet sweet revenge.’
Another quipped: ‘Petty revenge – best served via unsent text…’
While one person stated: ‘The fact that it took her half an hour to check if you left shows just how little she cared about your presence.’
A user jibbed: ‘I think it’s safe to say she wasn’t the one.’ One person added: ‘Too bad people can’t leave date reviews on those dating apps too.’
Others even offered the man advice, suggesting he should have answered her text with: ‘I left because you didn’t show up.’
