A mum revealed how she transformed her kitchen for under £150 while her toddler slept.
Renovating a kitchen isn’t a cheap feat, but there’s alternative ways to revamp your room on a budget, one mum found. Maisie Rees, 35, took on the challenge of transforming her dated kitchen for under £150 in less than a week, and all while her two-year-old daughter had nap time.
Speaking to Tap Warehouse, the DIY savvy mum, from Birmingham, said: “I began by creating some mock ups on my Mac, messing around with what to paint on the backsplash and what colour the cupboards would be.

“Once I was happy, I began painting the walls, ceiling and existing tiled backsplash. For the backsplash, I primed it with white paint and then hand-painted the black graphic shapes that I created by using cardboard templates – this probably took the longest.”
Speaking on the challenges she faced with the transformation, Maisie said: “Because I was doing everything myself, I didn’t want to make any mistakes, so I didn’t start doing anything until I was confident with how I wanted it to look.”
Deciding the cupboards also needed a little TLC, Maisie opted to wrap them in vinyl. The final part of the transformation included changing up the cupboard handles and spray painting the oven.
Maisie shared the step-by-step process on her home Instagram account. She added: “Our budget didn’t allow for us ripping out the kitchen and starting again, so I thought I’d make do with what we have instead and give our home a bit of a makeover.
“I usually work with a small budget, so I regularly make over Ikea furniture to match my colour scheme or upcycle charity shop finds if I want something that looks unique.”
The mum set up her account to share renter friendly decorating hacks. Having studied graphic design as a student and now being an interior stylist, Maisie wanted her home to reflect her creativity and eye for design.

Sharing tips to complete DIY projects on a budget, Maisie advises to “prep” to save yourself from any potential mishaps and giving yourself “double the work” down the line. She advised: “If it’s wooden furniture, lightly sand, if it’s Ikea furniture, use the correct primer, if it’s painting tiles, use the right type of paint. You’ll thank yourself later!”
