I'm worried my agency will let me go once they know about my osteoarthritis

DEAR DEIDRE: I HAVE difficulty bending, walking and have terrible stiffness in my joints if I sit for too long.

I am 59 and struggle with osteoarthritis in my back.

I am a teaching assistant employed by an agency, but I worry that I will not be able to continue.

The agency doesn’t know about the osteoarthritis although they know my mobility is becoming an issue.

I think if they did know the extent of my health issues, my employment with them would cease.

I can’t retire yet as I don’t have enough money saved and my pensions aren’t enough to live on.

I can’t survive if I don’t work but I don’t feel I can do a job in a school any more.

I know I can still contribute a lot to a role as long as it doesn’t involve much movement.

DEIDRE SAYS: I am sorry you are struggling. It may be worth talking to the agency as there may be other jobs available which would suit you better.

If you have to go part-time or stop working, you may be entitled to financial support.
