One of the many perks of being a famous person is that weather doesn’t apply to you. Most people are shackled to the coming and going of seasons, taking the good with the bad and the warm with the frigid just as Mother Nature intended. Celebrities — not so much. Rather, being a person with a great deal of access and money means shopping around for the weather you want and then just going there, Grecian calendar be damned.
While our unenlightened selves are quick to react with feelings of envy, we should instead see the good coming out of Jennifer Lopez’s ability to run down a beach mid-February or Hailey Bieber’s New Year’s Eve yacht romp, which is that we know exactly what swimsuits to buy for spring way ahead of schedule. As it happens, the time-travelling style leaders who’ve adopted poolside season early this year are all wearing the same risqué trend: white bikinis. Gasp!
While it may seem out there (anyone else remember thinking swimsuits couldn’t be white because they’d look like underwear?), the style is actually a crazy flattering secret so many celebrities are clued into. Pippa Middleton made a Christmas Day outing in a white polka-dot Heidi Klein two-piece in St. Bart’s within days of Rita Ora being beachside in a white Melissa Odabash bikini (the exact one Eva Longoria has also worn). And just this month, Olivia Culpo wore one by Indah in Cabo San Lucas, while Emma Roberts wore a buttercup yellow bikini by Solid & Striped that was so pale it may as well have been white.
The more we dug into this trend, the more we realized our icons have been wearing it for years. Kelly Ripa twinned with her hubbo in matching whites last January, Bella Hadid has sported white ‘kinis from Frankie’s Bikinis and For Love and Lemons, and Dua Lipa’s worn the same Hunza G set as Hailey.
The reason every celeb and their celebrity uncle has worn a white bikini? It’s actually super flattering. The stark, clean color contrasts with skin of all shades in a way that brings out warm undertones. If it’s the beginning of the season and you still haven’t locked down your base tan, the milky neutral will help you fake it at least halfway.
If you’re not a two-piecer, white one-pieces are another item that lives in a bunch of famous people’s swim drawers. Margot Robbie has worn this white one-shoulder style by Myra, while Chrissy Teigen has opted for a plunging V-neck from the same brand. Selena Gomez, meanwhile, went classic in a cream L*Space maillot, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wore a Hunza G one-piece with tortoiseshell ringlets.
While reality requires us to keep doing this “winter” thing for a few more weeks, there’s nothing stopping us from fast-forwarding to spring with the one swimsuit style so many celebs are proving is about to be major. Shop the best celeb-loved and celeb-lookalike white bikinis below.
