Kanye West has become a bit of a reoccurring character on South Park. In 2009, Matt Stone and Trey Parker made an entire episode ripping on the rapper, mainly for not being able to take a joke. And shockingly, West wrote a blog post after the episode premiered, saying that he wants to become a better person because of the South Park episode.
Bill Hader helped write the ‘South Park’ episode starring Kanye West
Even some of the biggest South Park fans might not know about Bill Hader being a writer for the animated series. The SNL alum has written for several episodes, including the iconic Kanye West episode involving fish sticks.
“The first episode I worked on with them was the Kanye West episode with the fish sticks,” Hader reveals. “They have these South Park retreats. You get to stay in a nice hotel, and then you wake up in the morning, and you go to a suite, and you just come up with South Park ideas… That’s where we came up with the fish sticks idea.”
But how did the rapper respond to the episode that made fun of him throughout?
Kanye West gave a humble response to the ‘South Park’ episode that made fun of him
Two days after the episode premiered, West took to his website to write a response. Shockingly, he says the episode that ripped on him made him want to become a better person.
“South Park murdered me last night, and it’s pretty funny,” West wrote, according to MTV News. “It hurts my feelings, but what can you expect from South Park? I actually have been working on my ego. Having the crazy ego is played out at this point in my life and career. I used to use it to build up my esteem when nobody believed in me. Now that people do believe and support my music, the best response is ‘Thank you’ instead of ‘I told you so!’”
“I just wanna be a doper person, which starts with me not always telling people how dope I think I am,” West admits. “I need to just get past myself. Drop the bravado and just make dope product,” he continued. “As long as I act like a b—h, this type of sh– will happen to me… I’m not actually a huge douche. I’m sure the writers at South Park are really nice people in real life. Thanks for taking the time to draw my crew. That was pretty funny also.”
Matt Stone and Trey Parker react to the rapper’s response
During a video where Parker and Stone go through fan-favorite episodes of South Park, they discuss how West reacted to their storyline about him.
“The weird thing is that after this episode, everyone was asking, ‘What’s Kanye going to say?’” says Stone. “Because the whole point of that episode was, ‘Kanye, get a sense of humor because you seem so humorless about yourself.’ And two days later, Kanye wrote a blog about himself on his website. And it was all caps, saying, ‘You’re right, I’ve been a really crappy guy lately, and I need to grow up, and I need to learn to be able to laugh a little bit. And we’re like, ‘That was weird, that’s not what we expected!’ So it was this complete Mea Culpa.”
But then, he went on to insult the South Park writers in his song “Gorgeous,” a year after the episode premiered.
“So he is mad?” Stone questioned.
“Maybe he was just being funny,” Parker jokes.
