Former editor-in-chief of Vogue France Carine Roitfeld has praised the Princess of Wales for looking polished and championing British design.
But the French queen of fashion said she feels that Kate should wear ‘more black’ and is actually a ‘bit too polished’ for her taste.
‘She only wear black at the funeral,’ Roitfeld told The Times. ‘Maybe it’s a law in the Royal Family, but I would dress her more in black. Black eyeliner. More Saint Laurent, more Chanel, more French.’
Kate has donned a number of black ensembles in recent years, including a suit to the Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Yeovilton in September, but is most often seen in a stunning array of colours.
She wore a black coat dress, veiled hat and pearl jewellery to the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

Roitfeld, who ran Vogue Paris between 2001 and 2010, told The Telegraph in 2019 that she would like Kate to be more ‘rock’n’roll’ because she is ‘very proper’.
Were the Princess of Wales to move into fashion, Roitfeld said she would ‘take a bit of the Kate Moss to put in the Kate Middleton.’
In her most recent comments on the Royal’s style, she seems to have changed her position, praising Kate for dressing ‘well for her body shape’.
The fashionista was also asked how she would style Queen Camilla.
She replied that the Queen should ditch the gowns and instead opt for pant suits, because she is ‘a woman who likes to ride horses, to go in nature’ so when she is in dresses you ‘don’t believe her’.

The suggestion comes as Kate herself has dropped the dresses in favour of suits, in a move which shows she has grown in confidence in her role and focuses on campaign work.
Along with her newly cut ‘curtain bangs’ haircut, the 41-year-old’s recent looks project a purposeful, business-like image and could not be further from the primary-hued dresses she has favoured until now.
This led to many to ask whether there is a new face on the Princess’ team, or whether there is a style advisor in the wings.
But sources close to the future Queen insist that is not the case, saying the spring in Kate’s step is simply down to her being a woman who has finally hit her stride.
One explains that while the ‘step-up’ to become Princess of Wales was a daunting one, she now has a year ‘in the job’ under her belt.
Kate still works closely on her wardrobe with long-term personal assistant Natasha Jackson, but insiders said that to paint the Princess as a ‘passive participant’ would be to ‘massively underestimate’ her.
Her polished new wardrobe also ties in with her and William’s decision to appoint the first ‘CEO’ to run their household.

Another insider said: ‘There’s a definite sense of the couple running their duties in a more business-like away, with far less of the historic fripperies, and I suspect that’s filtered through to other areas of their lives.’
The Princess has publicly adopted new brands such as Samantha Carmeron’s Cefinn range, French label Sezane and luxury brand ME+EM.
She blends this with high-end outfits by long-term favourites such as Alexander McQueen, who also designed her wedding dress, and Roland Mouret.
The mother-of-three commenced the transition to corporate attire at The Rugby World Cup on September 9 with an Alexander McQueen suit.
The royal opted for her £1,945 white Alexander McQueen blazer and matching trousers.
She complemented her suit with a dazzling jewellery set she first wore for Princess Charlotte’s christening in 2015 – including her pair of £3,750 Mappin & Webb ‘Empress’ Diamond Carriage Earrings and matching £2,000 Empress Mini White Gold & Diamond Pendant Necklace.
