BILLS, bills, bills . . . many of them have risen since the start of lockdown.
While socialising and travel costs have been less, those around the home have certainly totted up.
From extra washing-up to bath-time pamper sessions, many of us may have found our water bills have risen — but there are easy ways to cut back and save . . .
Meter yourself: If you aren’t already on a meter, check if you can reduce your bill by having one installed free of charge. CCWater has an online water meter calculator that can help you see if you would be better off. If you read your meter regularly, you can look for little ways to cut your usage — turning off the taps while brushing your teeth, for example.
Bowled over: Using a washing-up bowl to clean plates or cutlery twice a day rather than running the hot tap as you wash up can save pounds. According to Save Water Save Money, you could save £25 a year on your gas and £30 on your metered bill.
Shorter showers: If you have already switched from baths to showers to cut the cost of keeping clean, try shortening your showers next. The average person spends a little more than eight minutes in the shower. But cutting that by a minute will save £120 a year for an average four-person metered household.
Here to help: If you have cut back and are still struggling, it is worth looking into applying for the independent scheme Watersure to reduce your bills. You will have to prove that your household needs lots of water — for example, if you have more than three school-age children.
And you also need to receive one of the following benefits: Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Pension Credit, and income-related Employment and Support Allowance.
You won’t qualify if you use a garden sprinkler system or have a pool. Apply via your water supplier.
