As Ashton Kutcher and wife Mila Kunis are slammed for defending rapist Danny Masterson, FEMAIL lays bare his VERY scandalous past – from his ‘creepy’ comments about underage stars to Demi Moore’s claims he cheated on her
- Ashton, 45, and Mila, 40, wrote letters to the judge asking for leniency for Danny
- He is no stranger to controversy, and has made a slew of problematic statements
- The actor was also embroiled in an explosive cheating scandal in 2011
Ashton Kutcher and his wife, Mila Kunis, are currently embroiled in scandal – as it was revealed last week that the couple had defended convicted rapist Danny Masterson and begged the judge for leniency in his sentencing.
The shocking news has sparked immense backlash for the pair – and has lead to some of the 45-year-old actor’s troubling statements and actions from the past to come back into the spotlight.
An old clip of the star – taken when he was 25 years old – which showed him making an unsettling comment about how he was ‘waiting’ for stars like Hilary Duff, who was 15 at the time, and the Olsen twins, who were 17, to turn 18 has resulted in Ashton being branded as ‘gross’ and ‘creepy’ in recent weeks.
Another resurfaced interview, which showed him discussing his first kiss with Mila – which took place when she was only 14 and he was 19 on set of That ’70s Show – has also taken front and center stage recently, and it sparked intense speculation surrounding the nature of the costars’ relationship when they acted in the sitcom together.

It’s safe to say that Ashton is no stranger to controversy – and those are certainly not the only times that he has faced fury over the years.
In fact, he has had to endure an onslaught of backlash on numerous occasions thanks to his problematic statements – like the time he called September 11 the ‘greatest day ever’ because football season was starting (despite the fact that thousands of people had died on that date a decade earlier).
He was also accused of cultural appropriation and racism when he starred in a commercial that involved him impersonating an Indian man by making his skin significantly darker and using an over-exaggerated accent.
This is also not the first time that he publicly supported someone involved in criminal activity – back in 2011, he was blasted after he complained that one of his favorite football coaches had been fired, despite it being brought to light that he knew the assistant coach had been sexually assaulting children and didn’t report it.
Ashton built up a fierce reputation for being a wild partier and womanizer in the early years of his career – and he even once admitted that he was ‘out of control with women.’
His habits got so out of hand in 2014, that it was reported that producers of Two and a Half Men had to ban him from partying on set after he started throwing rampant celebrations in his trailer.
He was also embroiled in an explosive cheating scandal – after his ex-wife Demi Moore claimed he had been unfaithful to her multiple times throughout their romance with much-younger women.
The actress also accused Ashton of pressuring her to have three ways and making comments that lead to her breaking her 20-year sobriety.
While Mila, 40, has had a far-less problematic past, she has stuck by her troublesome husband since they tied the knot in 2012.
As the couple come into the hot seat for sticking up for Danny, FEMAIL went ahead and recapped all of their other scandals – from Ashton’s infidelities and disastrous breakup with Demi to his eyebrow-raising and tone-death comments.
Supporting a convicted rapist: Ashton and Mila wrote letters to the judge ahead of Danny’s sentencing and begged for leniency – despite him being found guilty of sexually assaulting two women

Danny was convicted of sexually assaulting two women in 2003 back in May, and he was sentenced to 30 years behind bars last week.
In their letters to the court, which were obtained by DailyMail.com, Mila and Ashton gushed over Danny, and insisted that he always ‘treated people with decency, equality, and generosity.’
‘He’s an extraordinarily honest and intentional human being,’ Ashton wrote in his message to the judge.
‘Over 25 year relationship, I don’t ever recall him lying to me. He’s taught me about being direct and confronting issues in life and relationships head-on, resolving them, and moving forward.’
In hers, Mila ‘wholeheartedly’ vouched for Danny’s ‘exceptional character’ and the ‘tremendous positive influence’ he has on those around him, including her.
She went to assert that Danny is an ‘outstanding role model’ – and celebrated his strength in staying away from drugs.
‘His dedication to avoiding all substances has inspired not only me but also countless others in our circle,’ she continued.
‘Danny’s steadfastness in promoting a drug-free lifestyle has been a guiding light in my journey through the entertainment world and has helped me prioritize my well-being and focus on making responsible choices.’
After Mila and Ashton’s letters were made public, they faced an onslaught of criticism from people all across the globe – including other stars like Amy Schumer and Christina Ricci – as well as one of Danny’s victims.

The couple then issued an apology , sharing a short, joint video to their social media accounts in which they insisted that they ‘support victims’
The woman, whose name has not been shared, called their letters ‘incredibly insulting and hurtful’.
‘My hope is that they learn radical accountability and the importance of self-education to learn when to keep their privilege in check,’ she said.
The couple then issued an apology, sharing a short, joint video to their social media accounts in which they insisted that they ‘support victims.’
Ashton – who has co-founded Thorn, an nonprofit organization that works to stop the exploitation of children – said: ‘We are aware of the pain that has been caused by the character letters we wrote on behalf of Danny Masterson.
‘We support victims,’ Mila added. ‘We have done this historically through our work and will continue to do so in the future.’
Ashton continued: ‘A couple months ago, Danny’s family reached out to us and they asked us to write character letters to represent the person that we knew for 25 years so that the judge could take that into full consideration relative to the sentencing.’
Mila went on to say: ‘The letters were not written to question the legitimacy of the judicial system or the validity of the jury’s ruling.
‘They were intended for the judge to read. And not to undermine the testimonies of the victims or re-traumatize them in any way.’
‘We would never want to do that. And we are sorry if that has taken place,’ Ashton emphasized.
‘Our heart goes out to every single person that has ever been a victim of sexual assault, sexual abuse or rape,’ Mila concluded.
A controversial start: Ashton and Mila first met when she was cast in That ’70s Show at age 14 – and some have wondered if something romantic went on between her and then-19-year-old Ashton
Amid the recent backlash, many have started to question the early years of Mila and Ashton’s relationship – since she was only 14 when they met on set of That ’70s Show, while he was 19
While the two stars didn’t officially start dating until years later – rumors have swirled that something romantic went on between them when they were starring in the series for years
Amid the recent backlash, many have started to question the early years of Mila and Ashton’s relationship – since the actress was only 14 years old when she met the The Butterfly Effect alum on set of That ’70s Show, while he was 19.
While the two stars didn’t officially start dating until years later – they got together in 2012, six years after the show came to an end – rumors have been swirling that something romantic went on between them when they were starring in the series together.
The two played love interests Jackie Burkhart and Michael Kelso in the sitcom, and their chemistry on-screen was undeniable.
And while they did form a close bond behind-the-scenes too, both Mila and Ashton have insisted that it was strictly platonic.
During an appearance on the Late Late Show in 2016, Mila explained that even the thought of dating her costar felt inappropriate on ‘all levels’ at the time.
Ashton also told Howard Stern on his radio show, ‘It was really awkward because I’m like a 19-year-old kid. She was 14. She was like my little sister. I wanted to make sure she was OK.’
A source who worked on the show told DailyMail.com earlier this week that while the two stars were ‘flirty’ on set, Ashton knew his ‘boundaries’ and did not make a move on her
The actor also stated in an interview on The One Show earlier this year, ‘There was zero romantic connection between the two of us.’
A source who worked on the show told DailyMail.com earlier this week that while it was obvious that the two stars were ‘crazy about each other’ and were ‘flirty’ on set, Ashton knew his ‘boundaries’ and did not make a move on her.
‘Everyone who worked on the show could see the early signs that Ashton and Mila were crazy about each other,’ they revealed.
‘But as far as the allegations that there was anything going on between Mila and Ashton before she was 18… if so, they kept it under wraps.
‘They were flirty, but they were costars, and Mila was incredibly mature for her age. Ashton knew what the boundary was as did Danny.’
The insider insisted that the pair always kept it professional, and that the flirting seemed innocent – adding that the actress seemed more like a ‘little sister’ than anything else to the other cast members.
The scandalous smooch: When they had to lock lips for the show, Ashton bet Danny he’d be able to turn the peck into a ‘French kiss’ – despite stating that it felt ‘illegal’ to make out with someone so young
Ashton has faced immense scrutiny in recent weeks over an old clip of him and Mila discussing their first kiss on set of the show
He admitted that he bet Danny that he would be able to turn what was supposed to be a peck into a ‘French kiss’ – despite admitting that it felt ‘illegal’ to make out with someone so young
Ashton has faced immense scrutiny in recent weeks over an old clip of him and Mila discussing their first kiss on set of the show.
In it, he admitted that he bet Danny that he would be able to turn what was supposed to be a peck into a ‘French kiss’ – despite admitting that it felt ‘illegal’ to make out with someone so young.
Mila explained in the resurfaced footage, which originally aired in 2002 on Rosie O’Donnell’s talk show, that she was ‘extremely scared’ about having to kiss her much older co-star for the show.
She said it happened during the first week of filming, when she was only 14, and described herself as a ‘little girl’ who had never locked lips with anyone before.
Ashton then revealed that he and Danny set a ‘little side’ wager about the smooch, which saw Danny offering him $10 to ‘French kiss her.’
‘I’m thinking, “This is slightly illegal, right?”‘ Ashton said, alluding to Mila’s young age.
Even so, he said he agreed to the bet – but when he ended up kissing Mila, she insisted to the talk show host that ‘he never got his tongue in her mouth.’

She said it happened during the first week of filming, when she was only 14, and described herself as a ‘little girl’ who had never locked lips with anyone before
An insider told DailyMail.com that the controversial kiss was simply acting and nothing more.
‘That kiss was scripted, and they are actors,’ they insisted. ‘Ashton was weary about it and eventually realized that it was just a scene and he was just an actor.’
Still, the thought of then 19-year-old Ashton locking lips with then-14-year-old Mila – and making a secret bet with Danny over whether or not he’d be able to turn it into a make out session has left some people uncomfortable.
Mila has previously revealed that she lied to the show’s producers during the audition process about her age, and that they only found out when it came time to sign her contract.
‘I told them I was gonna be 18, which … is not technically a lie, ’cause at one point, given all things went right, I was gonna be 18,’ she told Jay Leno on his show in 2012.
‘[The creators] were so sweet, they were like, “Well, we loved you at that point, so what did we care?”
‘It was in the heyday of like, older kids playing younger kids, and I was actually of the age of the character.’
‘We’re all waiting for her to turn 18’: A resurfaced clip has resulted in Ashton being branded as ‘gross’ and ‘creepy’ over comments he made about Hilary Duff when she was 15 and he was 25
Ashton also came under fire last week after an old video of him making a problematic comment about Hilary Duff when she was 15 years old made its way around the web
In a 2003 episode of his show Punk’d, then 25-year-old Ashton said of Hilary, ‘She’s one of the girls that we’re all waiting for to turn 18. Along with the Olsen twins.’ Hilary is seen left in 2003, while the Olsen twins are seen right in 2003

In a 2003 episode of his show Punk’d, then 25-year-old Ashton said he couldn’t ‘wait’ for the Lizzie McGuire star to come of age.
He stated, ‘She’s one of the girls that we’re all waiting for to turn 18. Along with the Olsen twins.’
Ashton and Hilary both starred in the movie Cheaper By the Dozen together, which came out in 2003, right around the time that the Punk’d episode aired.
They also reunited 10 years later, when she had a guest appearance in the season 10 finale of his show Two and a Half Men.
On social media, some people branded his comment about her and Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen as ‘gross’ and ‘creepy,’ and another even called him a ‘slime ball.’
Accusations of racism: Ashton was scrutinized in 2012 after he was seen with brown face while portraying an Indian man in a Popchips commercial
Back in 2012, Ashton was slammed for partaking in a Popchips commercial that was deemed as ‘racist’
The advert was designed like a mock dating game show, and the actor dressed up as four characters who were on the hunt for love – including a ‘Bollywood director’ named ‘Raj’
Back in 2012, Ashton was slammed for partaking in a Popchips commercial that was deemed as ‘racist.’
The advert was designed like a mock dating game show, and the actor dressed up as four different characters who were on the hunt for love.
One of them, however, a ‘Bollywood director’ named ‘Raj’ – resulted in Ashton being accused of cultural appropriation.

While portraying the Indian man, his skin was darkened and he spoke in a stereotypical Indian accent.
‘If you find yourself putting brown makeup on a white person in 2012 so they can do a bad “funny” accent in order to sell potato chips, you are on the wrong course. Make some different decisions,’ one popular social media star, named Anil Dash, scathed at the time.
Following the scrutiny, Popchips released a statement insisting that it was created to ‘provoke a few laughs’ and that it was ‘never intended’ to ‘offend anyone.’
‘The new popchips worldwide dating video and ad campaign featuring four characters was created to provoke a few laughs and was never intended to stereotype or offend anyone,’ it said.
‘At Popchips, we embrace all types of shapes, flavors and colors, and appreciate all snackers, no matter their race or ethnicity. We hope people can enjoy this in the spirit it was intended.’
In the end, the brand removed Raj from the commercial and left Ashton’s three other characters – a Karl Lagerfeld-eqsue fashionista, a ‘stoner,’ and a tattooed biker.
Ashton never addressed the drama, but Popchips CEO Keith Belling later said, ‘I take full responsibility and apologize to anyone we offended.’
Tone-deaf comments: Ashton publicly supported Penn State coach Joe Paterno when he was involved in a child abuse scandal and tweeted that 9/11 was the ‘greatest day of the year’
Ashton (seen in 2011) has come under fire for comments he’s made over the years. On 9/11 in 2011, he tweeted it was the ‘greatest day of the year’ because it was the start of football season
Ashton has come under furious fire for various comments he’s made over the years.
Most notably, on September 11 in 2011 – 10 years after the Twin Towers tragically collapsed after being struck by planes, killing thousands of people – the actor left many people scratching their heads when he tweeted it was the ‘greatest day of the year.’
Ashton was excited that it was the start of the football season, but some found the post to be insensitive and tone-death.
He deleted it soon after, and tried to do damage control by writing in another tweet, ‘I got mad respect for the people that suffered on 9/11.
‘Please don’t twist my enthusiasm. [In] hindsight… yeah, that was probably a poorly worded tweet.’
He also put himself in the center of controversy two months later, when he publicly supported Penn State football coach Joe Paterno (seen) after he was involved in a child abuse scandal

Joe was fired by the university after his assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, was charged with 40 counts of sexual abuse of children – and Joe was accused of knowing about it and failing to report it to the proper authorities.
‘How do you fire [Joe Paterno]? #Insult #noclass,’ Ashton wrote after the news broke. ‘As a Hawkeye fan, I find it in poor taste.’
After facing immense criticism, Ashton posted a follow-up explaining that he ‘didn’t have the full story’ and that he ‘recanted’ his statement about Joe.
He added, ‘As an advocate in the fight against child sexual exploitation, I could not be more remorseful for all involved in the Penn State case,’ along with the hashtag ‘#Admitwhenyoumakemistakes.’

‘Thank you everyone for the feedback on the questions I posted on LinkedIn. Good and bad. Already a learning experience,’ he wrote.
‘Looking to host an open live conversation on Monday morning on my FB page about gender equality in the work place.
‘I’ve already offended some folks by asking the wrong questions. I’m certain given the sensitivity of the topic I will say other things wrong.
‘Hope we can find space to be wrong in the pursuit of getting it right. We have centuries of ground to make up in a short order and I don’t want the basics to be off limits. Some clearly don’t yet get the basics.’
During the live chat, he explained that he became passionate about the topic after he launched his venture capital firm Sound Ventures and ‘a lot of his employees’ came forward with ‘abuses they’ve faced’ in the workplace.
‘The a**holes that are sexually assaulting people and sexually harassing people, no more hall passes,’ he said.
‘This is amazing, what’s happening, and women coming out and putting these, for lack of a better word, f**kers down – great.’

And in 2014, a source told Us Weekly that Warner Bros. executives had to get involved after his love of having fun started to affect his work.
The outlet claimed that producers of Two and a Half Men banned him from partying on set – after he started throwing ‘wild’ bashes in his trailer that often ‘got way out of hand.’

Kathy added that he ‘made it perfectly clear’ that he believes she has ‘absolutely nothing to offer him during his precious time on Earth.’
‘It was bizarre and rude and made me feel as if he thought I was beneath him, someone not worth talking to in the slightest,’ she recalled.
She also said she once ran into him at a restaurant a few years later and that she tried to say hi to him – but that he ignored her.

Disastrous first marriage: Demi Moore accused Ashton of being unfaithful to her, pressuring her into having threesomes, and making comments that lead her to break her 20-year sobriety
When Ashton married his first wife, Demi Moore, in 2005, many thought that their romance would mark the end of his wild ways. He’s seen with Demi, her ex Bruce Willis, and their kids
When Ashton married his first wife, Demi, in 2005, many thought that their romance would mark the end of his wild ways.
And for six years, it seemed like that was the case – as Ashton was every inch the doting husband and step-father, and quickly stepped in to help raise the three daughters – Scout, Tallulah, and Rumor – whom Demi shared with her ex, Bruce Willis.
But in 2011, the couple shocked the world when they announced that they were getting a divorce.
And in her 2019 book, Inside Out, Demi made a slew of shocking allegations against Ashton, claiming that he had been unfaithful to her during their marriage, pressured her into having threesomes, and made comments that lead to her breaking her 20-year sobriety.
She recalled one night when she was out to dinner with the Two and a Half Men star, when she said he told her he didn’t believe ‘alcoholism was a real thing.’
She said his comment made her want to drink again because she felt like she had to be what Ashton wanted.

She claimed that he had been unfaithful to her during their marriage, pressured her into having threesomes, and made comments that lead to her breaking her 20-year sobriety
‘One night, we put some clothes on and went out to dinner. Ashton was enjoying a glass of good red wine when he said, “I don’t know if alcoholism is a real thing. I think it’s all about moderation,”‘ she wrote.
‘I wanted to be that girl. The girl who could have a glass of wine at dinner, or do a tequila shot at a party.
‘In my mind, Ashton wanted that too. So I tried to become that: a fun, normal girl. I didn’t think, “This is a kid in his 20s who has no idea what he’s talking about.”
‘I didn’t think, “I have nearly two decades of sobriety under my belt, and that’s a huge accomplishment.”
‘Instead, I cast about for justifications for his argument. Plenty of people party too much in their youth and then develop a perfectly healthy relationship with alcohol, I told myself… Back in our room, I took a beer from the minibar.’
She also recalled how Ashton would ‘express fantasies of bringing a third person in their bed,’ so she agreed to ‘show him how great and fun she could be.’
‘I wanted this marriage to work, and I was willing to do whatever it took, to jump through any hoop,’ she explained, adding that the threesomes ‘presented a totally false sense of power’ in the end.
Her most shocking revelation was arguably that Ashton cheated on her with a much-younger woman in their home while she was out of town.
She claimed that the actor met his alleged mistress while he was out bowling with her and her daughter Rumer.
She said the woman slipped her number to him on a napkin, but he told Demi about it when they got home that night.
‘When he showed it to me, I said, “That is just gross. We were there with our kid, and she was there with her mother and her sister,”‘ she explained.
In 2011, a 22-year-old woman named Sara Leal (seen) came forward and claimed that she had sex with Ashton in a hotel room in Los Angeles while he was still married to Demi
‘I had a visceral response – it was revulsion. So the fact that he then pursued her felt like a real “f**k you.”‘
When she caught him, she said he insisted that ‘because they had brought a third party into their relationship, the lines were blurred.’
‘I was strangely flooded with shame, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this whole thing was somehow my fault,’ she admitted.
In 2011, a 22-year-old woman named Sara Leal came forward and claimed that she had sex with Ashton in a hotel room in Los Angeles – something Demi said she only found out about through a Google alert.
‘I got a Google alert on my phone,’ she wrote in her book. ‘”Ashton Kutcher caught cheating” flashed across my screen.
‘Our anniversary that had just passed. There were quotes from a young blonde replaying Ashton’s pickup lines. I felt sick to my stomach: I knew those words. I knew she wasn’t lying.
‘He spent the night with her, got up, and drove home to celebrate his anniversary with his wife.’
Demi added that this was the final straw, and their marriage ended soon after.
In an interview with Esquire magazine earlier this year, Ashton admitted that he was ‘f**king pissed’ when he read her book, but he did not address any of the allegations she made.

Ashton and Mila were scrutinized back in 2021, after they admitted that they don’t wash themselves or their kids daily.
They said they only bathe their children – daughter Wyatt, now eight, and son Dimitri, now six – when they see dirt on them and admitted to hardly using any soap because they don’t want to dry their delicate skin out.
At the time, Ashton admitted that he only usually cleans his ‘armpits and crotch,’ while Mila said she only washes the essentials like her ‘slits and t**s.’
They discussed their controversial approach to hygiene on the Armchair Expert podcast, which is hosted by Dax Shepard and Monica Padman.
After their comments sparked an uproar on social media, they seemed to make light of the situation when Ashton shared a video of Mila bathing their kids.
‘You’re putting water on the children? Are you trying to melt them? Are you trying to injure them with water?’ he said to his wife in the clip.
