One of the world’s top chefs impressed MasterChef: The Professionals viewers in a semi-finals episode of the show – because of the kind way he treated the three contestants fighting for a finals place.
British chef Jeremy Chan boasts two Michelin stars at London eatery Ikoyi, which recently also ranked in the world’s top 50 restaurants, and put pro chefs Tom, Lauren and Charlie through their paces in the latest episode of the show.
Chan’s restaurant, which charges up to £300 for its tasting menu dinners, is inspired by African cuisine and episode 17 saw the contestants helping his kitchen serve up the 18-course lunch menu service.
There was no hint of the fiery temperament that chefs are known for, with fans praising Chan for treating the hopefuls with respect – even when disaster struck for Lauren.
Serving up an octopus dish, the young chef forgot one portion…and looked nervous as the restaurant’s owner counted them up to reveal the mistake.
However, Chan, 36, was ice cool, and simply requested one of the octopus was cut in two to make a second portion.
Viewers were impressed with the two Michelin-starred chef’s calm approach.
One wrote: ‘This guy Jeremy is a class act – Wareing and Galetti should have come along for a refresher course – in cooking and in manners.’
Another added: ‘Yes, tonight’s show with Jeremy at Ikoyi’s was superb, he seems so sincere and genuine, it was really lovely to see, as some pro chef’s in the past on the have come across shouty and aggressive.’
British chef Jeremy Chan, who has two Michelin stars at the restaurant he co-owns, Ikoyi, was praised by viewers for the calm way he helped steer the three semi-final contestants Lauren (pictured), Tom and Charlie
Disaster struck at one point, when Lauren miscounted how many octopus were required to serve – but fans praised chef Chan for not losing his cool over the error
One viewer noted: ‘Chef Jeremy was so soft spoken and supportive – none of that yelling we’ve seen by previous chefs – candidates are more likely to do better work.’
Elsewhere, he was called ‘one of the most inspiring chefs with one of the most innovative restaurants I’ve ever seen on #MasterChefTheProfessionals.’
The second part of the show saw the trio of cooks hoping to lift the MasterChef Pro crown return to the kitchen.
Chef Charlie watched intently as Chan showed him how to prepare a dessert dish in the 18-course menu
Three down to two…Lauren, far left, was the latest contestant to leave the MasterChef pro kitchen – while Charlie, centre, and Tom, right, won a place in the final
A disappointed Lauren became the latest contestant to leave the competition, after failing to impress with a pork belly main and pineapple dessert
In a closely-fought final cook off, all three chefs faced criticism over their dishes – although Charlie’s monkfish main was enough to see him sail through to the finals.
Tom faced the wrath of Marcus Wareing for serving up a trimmed down guinea fowl breast, which the chef had decided to cut down to make it appear neater on the plate.
However, it was a tearful Lauren who was eventually shown the door after neither of her dishes – a smoked scotch bonnet pork belly followed by a charred pineapple dish with dark chocolate mousse – impressed Wareing or Galetti.
The remaining semi-finalists, James, Kasae and Tommy, will face a similar set of challenges in the next episode as they battle it out for the last two final places.
