Mood-boosting fashion buys to cure your January blues – from just £15

January is officially here, and while the new year can be an exciting time to start afresh, set personal goals or take up a new hobby, many of us are suffering from post-Christmas blues.

To lift your spirits, fashion brands are focusing on bright colours and joyful prints in their collections this season, which online styling service Stitch Fix claims can actually have a positive effect on your mood – otherwise known as “dopamine dressing”.

Stitch Fix enlisted the help of Shakaila Forbes-Bell, fashion psychologist and founder of Fashion is Psychology to discuss further.

“Dopamine dressing is an idea born from one of the core principles underpinning our motivations to wear certain clothes – to satisfy our emotional needs,” Shakaila explains.

Not only can shoppers get a happiness hit from wearing bright colours, but bold prints, fun textures and sentimental items can also have this effect.

“When you wear something you love that holds symbolic value, your confidence increases and you feel happy,” she adds.

According to research carried out by Stitch Fix, 29 per cent of Brits claim their mood is lifted when wearing bright shades, however, many are afraid to step out of their comfort zone, with the brand reporting that 69 per cent of the nation own just ten pieces of colourful clothing.

Right now, the high street is full of fun and affordable options to help you inject some colour into your wardrobe, but to make it easier, OK! Fashion Editor Harriet Wheeler has selected some of her favourite pick-me-up purchases for every budget.
