My daughter traced the man I said was her dad but DNA test proved me wrong

DEAR DEIDRE: MY 30-year-old daughter, who never knew her dad, recently traced the man I told her he was. But a DNA test proved me wrong – and she’s disgusted with me.

I got pregnant when I was 17. My boyfriend was already cheating on me and wanted me to terminate. He went off with the other girl and I never saw him again.

I’d confided in my boss about my boyfriend’s cheating. He was in his thirties and comforted me.

One evening we ended up having sex in the office but it never occurred to me he could be my baby’s dad as he’d used a condom.

I’m 52 now and I don’t even know if my daughter’s real dad is still alive. I feel so guilty about it.

DEIDRE SAYS: Is your daughter sure her supposed father couldn’t cheat the test? Either way, it doesn’t sound as if he was ever going to be the loving dad she wanted.

Talk to her again and try to help her feel for the distressed 17-year-old you were back then.

The firm Cellmark (cellmark.co.uk, 0800 036 2522) can advise her on whether the test she used was likely to be reliable.

My e-leaflet on Finding Someone can help if she’s going to hunt for your boss but she shouldn’t have high hopes this time.
