EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Queen Camilla appears to receive posthumous forgiveness from Diana for her affair with Charles more than 25 years after the Princess’s death
More than 25 years after Diana’s death, Queen Camilla seems to have received posthumous forgiveness for her affair with Charles.
Ex- BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, recalling a conversation at Kensington Palace shortly before her death in 1997, quotes Diana: ‘Let’s face it, Camilla is the love of Charles’s life, and always has been. I don’t feel any animosity towards her…’
Adds Jennie: ‘If genuine, it was a magnanimous gesture from a woman who was finally resigned to a situation she couldn’t change and who had decided to move on.’
Jennie was commenting on the new series of The Crown, calling the depiction of Diana’s death as ‘cruel beyond measure’ to William and Harry.

Might the Princess of Wales lay her own wreath at the Cenotaph next year? William is apparently keen that Kate take part rather than watch from the balcony.
From the royal side, only three women have ever laid wreaths at the Cenotaph: the late Queen, Princess Anne and Prince Philip‘s equerry Captain Katherine Coulthard in 2018.
William’s attendance on Sunday indicated Kate’s rising stature. He traditionally signs his wreath. This year so did Kate.
While King Charles has promoted William, making him a commander in the Navy, an Army lieutenant colonel and a wing commander in the RAF, he still ranks lower than Princess Anne, who never served.
She is an admiral, general and air chief marshal. William, who will one day rule over all of the Armed Forces, is also navally subordinate to disgraced uncle Andrew, who is a rear admiral.

Victoria Coren Mitchell has been cleared by the BBC after a complaint that the Only Connect presenter didn’t believe man was descended from apes.
‘There are some differences of opinion about evolution,’ she declared. ‘I myself don’t believe in it at all.’
The BBC concluded ‘viewers would have taken the presenter’s remark as typical of her sardonic and humorously intended asides…’
Surely the only mystery is the existence of a viewer who understands the incomprehensible banalthon.
Yes Minister’s fictitious cabinet secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby neatly explains Rishi’s decision to elevate David Cameron.
‘Prime ministers have little choice… a party with just over 300 MPs forms a government – 100 are too old and silly to be ministers and 100 too young and callow.
‘Therefore, there are about 100 MPs to fill 100 posts. Effectively no choice at all.’
Reflecting on Cameron’s comeback, Boris Johnson’s sister Rachel remarks: ‘I play tennis with Dave, he’s a friend.
‘But it was an act of vanity accepting the job of Foreign Secretary.’
