Rosario Dawson says it was a uniquely personal experience starring in “Dopesick,” a new miniseries exploring the OxyContin opioid crisis.
“I have family and friends who have succumbed to this drug,” the 42-year-old screen star told Page Six at the show’s premiere Monday night.
“It kickstarted them into more opioid use and heroin use and it’s been absolutely devastating.”
The cast and crew of the Hulu drama were eager to work on the show, which was filmed in an area of Virginia that was targeted by OxyContin’s manufacturer, Purdue Pharma, and hard hit by the drug plague, Dawson said.
They wanted “to bring dignity to the survivors and the addicted. To bring the stories out, the families that have been affected and to hold people accountable,” she said.
She also added that there should be “a lot more outrage about this, it’s shocking.”
Dawson says she’s pleased that the miniseries, which also stars Michael Keaton, Kaitlyn Dever and Peter Sarsgaard, is coming out right now.
“I think this is a critical moment right now where people’s attentions are on how our systems are working and really feeling like we can’t go back to quote-unquote normal and I really hope this becomes part of that momentum moving forward that changes how things are done,” she explained.
Dawson, who has been dating Senator Cory Booker since 2019, came solo to the event and happily mingled with fellow castmates, including her on-screen husband Raúl Esparza.
The series premieres on Hulu on Oct. 13.
