If you’re struggling to find a reasonably-priced flight for your next vacation, there could be a simple way around it.

US-based Jess Bohorquez, who goes by @PointsByJ on TikTok, recently shared a clip which detailed the common travel mistake her best friend made when trying to book a flight.

The expert revealed that her friend had only been searching for round trips – which she claims should be avoided.

And, after explaining how to secure a more affordable trip, Jess was flooded with comments by other social media users.

US-based Jess Bohorquez recently took to TikTok to detail her best friend’s recent travel mistake that she made when trying to book a flight 

‘So my best friend was just over here and said something about travel that kind of blew my mind – so I knew I had to make a video about it,’ Jess began.

The content creator, who has also built up a large following on Instagram, continued: ‘[We’re] just talking about how hard it’s been to find flights to book with points that are a reasonable number of points… 

‘I asked her to tell me about how she was searching and it turns out she was only searching for round-trip flights.’

But Jess was stunned and revealed a much more suitable alternative.

She said: ‘The best way to search is for one ways.’ 

The expert added that her best friend claimed she was ‘always taught to search round trip’ but Jess tried to correct this way of thinking.

She shared: ‘This is my myth busting tip of the day.

‘If you want to find more reasonably priced flights, especially for points redemptions, search for each leg of the flight as a one way.’

Users on TikTok have been asking Jess questions of their own and have discussed their own experiences related to her flight booking tip 

The video was quickly flooded with comments as many seized the opportunity to ask further travel questions.

One user asked: ‘Okay I am also this person though. Do you book them as one ways too?

Jess responded: ‘Yes! I do! And love the flexibility to fly a different airline each direction if that’s going to give the best deal.’

Another user asked: ‘Can I combine Chase and Capital One points together for one singular flight?’

Jess explained to the commenter: ‘If you’re transferring to a travel transfer partner that both banks have? Then yes!’

One person said: ‘Cash fares used to be cheaper to book as round trips but even those days are gone – I think.’

Jess said: ‘I think you’re right.’

This year’s top five flight reward programs are favorites amongst flyers. Despite being highly similar, the average reward program costs are different amongst each of the top five airlines

Airlines typically offer both one-way and round-trip flights to customers.

Frequent flyers are increasingly turning to point systems and rewards programs offered by the airlines themselves in a bid to help save money.

According to US News, Alaska Airlines, Delta Airlines, and United Airlines fall amongst those with the best reward programs of 2023-2024.

American Airlines and JetBlue Airways were ranked fourth and fifth on the list.

Bankrate also concluded the amount of money that points and flight miles cost as of 2023 for each of these airlines based on bookings in cash, rewards costs, and economy airfare bookings.

The lowest entry is the United Airlines MileagePlus program, which starts at a 0.9 cents bankrate with an estimated value of $450 for 50,000 points/miles.

American Airlines AAdvantage comes in second place with a 1 cent bankrate, estimating at $500 for 50,000 points/miles.

The Alaska Airways Mileage Program starts at a 1.1 cent bankrate with an estimate value of $550 for 50,000 points/miles.

Delta Skymiles enters with a 1.2 cent bankrate and an estimate value of $600 for  50,000 points/miles.

Last but not least, JetBlue TrueBlue comes with a 1.3 cent bankrate and an estimate value of a whopping $650 for 50,000 points/miles.
